Hi
Ive just moved to ADSL24 and im abit lost as to why im not getting decent speeds, i have been with them around 4 weeks and it doesnt seem to be getting any better.
If anyone could have a quick look at these stats and let me know what they actually mean and any ideas to increase the speeds id be really grateful, I dont want to raise a ticket if there is nothing actually wrong
My stats from my Netgear DG834G v2 router:

My profile from the above seems good at 7150 but I havent been able to get over 2000.
I live one street away from the exchange and have fitted an ADSL faceplate from clarity.it to my master bt socket (the only socket in the house) but it didnt seem to do anything
Any ideas of anything else I can do??
Thanks in advance.
Wow - more like inside the the exchange?? Attenuation of 4dB is amazing.
As your profile is spot on, you should be seeing much higher speeds. You say its "never" got above 2000? This has to be either a router issue or something slowing the throughput down - it's certainly not us slowing you down (we don't even have the ability to do so).
Have you tried another router? Also, try setting the MTU to 1500 on the router. Additionally, have you tried another PC?
Thanks
James

WOW - ultra fast response!
Never seen it higher myself and I have been trying the speedtest almost daily (Ive kind of got obsessed about speeds and adsl settings!)
I live very close to the exchange luckily so was hoping for a high speed, I was concerned about my noise margin (14 db 26 db) after reading various forums etc, I thought that was the issue so bought faceplate but nothing changed.
At the moment I only have one laptop, I will try and get hold of another to run some tests, it couldnt be anything to do with the firewall on the laptop??
I will try the MTU setting when I work out where to set it on my router, any recommendations on a good wireless router?
Thanks again for the fast response, at least I know that there is nothing wrong at your end like stuck profile, just need to find the problem at mine.
Trust me, your line is perfect :) It's not a line issue.
The speedtouch routers are generally good - and cheap from www.dsldepot.co.uk (http://www.dsldepot.co.uk/product_details.asp?idProduct=851) (go for the Thomson ST 585v6 at under 20 quid).
Are you using wireless as this also could be the problem. Have you tried it on a cable to the router?

I have a netgear dg834g v2 wireless router at the moment
I will try it cabled when I find the right cable - I have used a wireless connection for the past few years as the socket is in the living room but my office is upstairs.
I will order one of the speedtouch you linked anyway, at 20quid it wont do any harm.
Is there be any special settings for ADSL2+ that need to be set on the router? I have set the MTU to 1500 see if that helps.
Cheers,
We don't use ADSL2+, so no need to touch that :).
The cable will be in the box that came with the router, it's an RJ45 ethernet cable. Make sure when you plug it into the router/laptop you turn of the wireless before testing as it may still be using the wireless.
James
Just to say james suggestion of wireless is a good one.
Do you have any other networks near by, You could have a near by network on the same channel number causing massive headaches
The netgear DG834V2 is an excellent router and shouldnt cause you any trouble, might be worth updating firmware tho

Cheers for the input Dan
I have ordered one of the routers James suggested and will have a play with the channel after work, I know I can see about 5 wireless networks (including my next door neighbour so maybe thats the cause). I will also check to see if there is any new firmware.
Just out curiosity, based on my stats from my first post what are the speeds I should be expecting? (and if anyone has any decent sites that explain how to work it out for myself please post them).
Thanks again,
Speeds of up to just below 7000...
just to go off topic a bit brovers i have 8 networks in my area which my laptop picks up and 6 of them are insecure tut tut...people just dont learn

I had this problem.
Wireless was to blame.
I have a 6.5MB line, and I struggled to get more than 300kbs through wireless.
Changed to RJ45 (20 metres of it) and immediately got the full 850kb/s out of it.

i got the new wireless router delivered today so will be having a go again tonight, gonna try it wired first on a laptop and do some tests and then see if it drops after going to wireless.
I really hope its not the wireless like you Gore, be a nightmare to run the length of cable id need to get it to my main pc in my office upstairs. Im hoping its the current wireless router at fault, its a few years old and Ive messed around with it over the years.
Let us know how you get on.

Well I got good news and bad news
The good news are that these are my new stats with the new speedtouch
Results Image not loaded
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 7150 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 8096 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 6476 kbps

So 6476 is a great increase on under 2000
This is connected via the ethernet
The bad news is that it refuses to connect wirelessly, even using a totally unsecured network. I can connect to the network and have an ip address assigned but no internet.
I have been trying for nearly two hours and it seems like a few others using this model are having the same issue:
http://www.routertech.org/viewtopic.php?p=20536
http://www.speedtouch.net.nz/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=521
I can ping the router (the wireless ip address assigned), one thing I find strange is that my default gateway is still the same as my old router, instead of 192.168.1.254 which is the speedtouch I have a gateway of 192.168.0.1. Not sure whether this is the issue as its all relatively new to me at the moment.
So im half there I suppose!! My speeds are great just need to sort the wireless out.
I know its the wrong forum but if anyone experienced this please let me know, im off to search the web, someone must have encountered this before!!
Cheers,

:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
Sorted it, for some reason the ip/dns details where hardcoded in the tcp/ip settings
now getting:
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 7000 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 8096 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 6297 kbps
WIRELESS which is amazing, and a massive improvement from before
Many thanks to everyone for ideas/advice
:)
There you go - it's amazing what a Speedtouch router can do ;)
