Hi James, thought I would try the forum.
This being my second day and I am still getting under 500k download although the figure in my router page said 4600 this morning, now standing at 4100.
I have read that we should keep router on all the time for the 10 days.
I have not been doing that.
Also, I read, shut router for 30 minutes, on again and something about sync.
Let me know how I can improve speed if that is possible and also if I can expect anything reasonable like the 3 to 4M I was getting moments before I signed into ADSL24.
Thanks to anyone for any advice.

Hi
500K is a respectable speed, if you mean 50K thats bad.
How often do you turn the router on and off, I used to restart mine every day and my profile was ok.
Al tho, at the end of the day, you cannot trick a higher profile, the profile is there for your benefit, If it was too high you would get errors and disconnections, which would be no good.
Try running a BT speed test below and see what IP profile your line currently has, and also the speed of data.

I do mean 500k................what do you mean it is a good speed.........for dial up?????
LOL !
I shut router down when not in use. But I pull the plug on it when it misbehaves. No telling when, maybe once a week.
Tried the BT Test and it went to signin name................I put my email down, but it would not have it...........
So, could not do it. Most times it does not even get that far. Just says....error....
the actually name to enter will be the login name provided in your controll panel, ie adsl123@adsllogin.co.uk
Also, 500K is speed terms is half a MB a second, which is quick.
You say you sync at 4000 so I cannot see where you got 500K figure from?

Various speed tests show 513 as highest. I get the figure from my router page which says Ds Rate Kbps 4160 is this not what they call Sync? Sorry to mislead you.
I sure hope that is not my top speed after 10 days, I cant speed in my car anymore, so I sure need the revs on my computer.

I think he means 500Kb per second (kilobits), not 500KB per second (kilobytes).
Yes, that is the speed you are synced at with the exchange which is in Kbps. Your actual download speed is in KBps. There are 8 bits in a byte. If you divide 4160 by 8 you get 520KBps.

Hence why I said 500k is very good,
Are your webpages/downloads going slowly at all?

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 500 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 4224 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 455 kbps
If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.

Aah, I see what's happened. Your router has resynced at a low speed to the exchange. However, you've now resynced at a higher rate. If you keep the router connected for 72 hours at that rate your speed will increase. This is standard practice and isn't to do with ADSL24.
BT operate the line profile, if it drops the change is instant. If it rises you have to wait 3 business days for it to rise back up again.

You do mean I must not switch the router off for the next 72 hours?
What if it switches off line (it does that sometimes).

As long as it doesn't resync at a lower speed, you should be OK.
The 500k stellar is talking about is 500 kbps not 500KB/sec which would be good.

Thats what confused me, must have had a bad sync once and its put it down

This has now been settled. I got on this morning to very slow speed, but by lunch time I was up to what I should be. Thanks everyone for your advice, and to James for his patience and wisdom and help.
