View Full Version : I'm a worry guts...!
Hi folks,
I got myself into a little...hrm...discussion on the message board @ DSL ZoneUK last night. I thought I understood things but maybe I'm not clear on the 'traffic management' / 'throttling' issue. Could some kind, helpful expert read the thread and reassure me please? Also, I have ordered the HOME Max 30 package and I'm wondering if the Office Max 45 package would get around any of the 'traffic management' stuff discussed in that thread. Sorry, I'm just not clear on this one. The Office Max package was mentioned to me yesterday and I know it doubles the upload speed but what about general performance at peak times? In the end I'll probably stick with the Home package I've ordered and see how it goes, unless there's a compelling reason to change my mind. I'm principally a home user - 3 networked Windows PC's, occasional software downloads, occasional p2p, otherwise browsing, chat etc etc...
I just want good performance throughtout the evening / weekends, which I can't get currently...as you'll see!
Many thanks, here's the thread: http://www.dslzoneuk.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3096

Hi Jem,
Entanet have introduced an anti-loss tool which kicks in when a central reaches maximum utilisation - if they hadn't done this, packet loss would occur, which would result in a reduction in speeds anyway. The tool will not decrease the rate limit for a central below 2 Mbps.
Entanet have 2 new centrals on order to keep up with the growth in demand.
Thanks Tim. What about my package choice? Any reason, around this issue, that I should go for the Office Max package? Also, do you have any comments on the what was said by my two respondents in that thread, relating to timing of these speed reductions and Marie referring to this as 'throttling'...? 'Throttling' seems to be a very contentious issue / word. I'm basically trying to feel confident that I will not get the dreadful performance that I currently get from Virgin in the evenings (see the table in my post @ DSL ZoneUK) and understand what the problem might be with Virgin compared to Entanet ISP's. Assurances about lack of throttling and traffic shaping seem to be almost meaningless when apparently well informed people argue about the meaning of those terms. I'm pretty confused about this and want to believe that I'm making the right move, for the right reasons, and...if possible choose the right service from day one.
Thanks again.

The off peak period for the Office packages starts at 8:00 pm Monday to Friday, so an advantage is that you have 2 extra hours each weekday before the users on the Home packages start their downloads.
Entanet's anti-loss tool is definitely not traffic shaping; I suppose it could be considered throttling though.
Hi Jem
Welcome to ADSL24...The package you have ordered should be fine. I have a similar setup to the one you have described. The office max 45 would be £10 wasted for the slight gains you may experience(1 months notice to change package's). I would say you are wise to start on the Home Max 30 package, at least you can always move up.
The Enternet network are currently in the process of introducing 2 more pipe's to cope with the influx of new customers. So hopefully the so called 'traffic management' / 'throttling' issue. whatever people wish to call it may become NON-Existent.
Anyway enough of the techie stuff....The service i get is TEN Times better than that which i received from Nildram(ISP)
Regards
Cliff:)
Ps Marie has downgraded her package from office max 45 to home max 30, so must be ok
Cliff, thanks and sorry for being a pain with all my concerns! Just tell me I'll never get results like this using ADSL24 / Entanet...just ran this test with no other traffic...
Just done that test with 3 PC's running and one downloading as well.

Hi Jem
Hav'ent used the dszoneuk speed test before...I am on a Macbookpro laptop,so i have done this speed test wirelessly(cannot get on the PC's lads are playing WOW, so the test is done with that in mind)
I am on telehouse central 2...so there is a slight dip.
I usually look at the speed of the file downloads and the ping output for the lads
Telehouse Central 1 =
Expected performance 7.2Mbps
Global Switch Central 1 =
Expected performance 7.2Mbps
Telehouse Central 2 =
Expected performance 6.2Mbps
speed (http://www.dslzoneuk.net/speedtest/speedtest.php?id=427553)
On the basis of that Brian...can you get me on line any faster than I've been told...?? :)
Hi Jem
hope to see you surfing here soon:D
cliff:)
Hi Jem
finnally got on the PC and ran a speed test (http://www.dslzoneuk.net/speedtest/speedtest.php?id=429823).this is not on the wireless laptop, its on the high end gaming Pc...Windows XP proffesional.
It nearly rocked me out of the chair
Cliff:)
Ps... i wish it always stayed at this level. also the other PC was running WOW at the same time.:D
