View Full Version : New Router
Hey there! Finally migrating soon from Orange (awful!) over to ADSL24 soon and I'm looking to get rid of there crappy Wanadoo (formerly before Orange bought them out) Livebox! I've been reading the thread of routers people are using and cut it down to these 2... They both seem really good but I've seen the ST-585v6 recommended the most and that it syncs higher!
However, I prefer multiple opinions! Have your say please! :)
Zoom Hayes 5590 X6 125Mbps ADSL2/2+ Wireless (http://www.dsldepot.co.uk/product_details.asp?idProduct=826)
Thomson ST-585v6 54M ADSL2+ Router w/4-Ethernet Ports (http://www.dsldepot.co.uk/product_details.asp?idProduct=851)
Thanks,
Sparx
:D
Anyone want to give an opinion yet?

I have a Netgear, and I don't know about any others, but the one that I see recommended most on here is the 585 v6. My friend got one and so far has had no problems.:)
Hi Sparx
The ST585v6 is a great little router. I would not hesitate to recommend one of these, plus, they can be bought dirt cheap from DSLdepot --->>> http://www.dsldepot.co.uk/product_details.asp?idProduct=851
I bought one from here ages ago, and its a dream compared to some routers I've had. Plus, if you can get away with running the 6.1.4.3 firmware (or any pre 6.2 firmware), you can also use the DMT tool for tweaking.
Good luck :)
Yeah ST585v6 is my current pick at the moment, will end up getting it! :)
Thanks,
Sparx
Go for the speedtouch.
Without it I would be stuck with 2-3 meg speeds because my line is poo, but because of the dmt tool I get to have 5.5 meg speeds with a bit of tweaking :)
I will show my ignorance and ask - what is the"DMT tool"?:o
I have a speedtouch 585V6 and I am certainly in need of more bandwidth.:(
Cheers.
The Xoom X6 is a cheapr-n-cheerful router, I don't rate it nowhere near the Thomsons :)

Does it have this DMT feature or whatever though? :P By the sounds of it, gives you better speed capabilities? Could anyone care to explain it? Thanks.
Dmt tool (http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=de&u=http://dmt.mhilfe.de/)
It basicaly allows you to increase/decrease your target snr on your line which plays a major part in how fast you can sync at.
If your using a speedtouch 585v6 it only works if the router has firmware 6.196 or below I think.
Luckily you can downgrade firmware if you need too.
I don't think it works with that Xoom router.

The ST 585v6 gets my vote too.

Have a look at the DMT site, I believe they have a new version out for the Speedtouch, and If I remember rightly it covers firmare 6.2.
Check it out.
Cheers for that, shall have a play with it :)
I ordered a 585v6 after hassling James about them.
This DMT tool, is it a windows app or something installed onto the router itself?
I have looked for instructions but the only site I can find is in German.
Its just a Windows app. The Zoom router is based on a Conexant Argon chipset and cannot be used with DMT.

I was talking about the speedtouch, I've had zoom modems in the past and didn't like them.
Do you have a link anywhere that has instructions for DMT? If it's something I can run to configure the line and then can go back to a proper OS (or even use wine) then I'll have some of that.
Something else I'm hoping speedtouch have is the ability to control the share of bandwidth between clients on my network. I've had a look at the instructions for the 585 but I'm one of those people that only ever reads them properly when it won't work.
If the speedtouch ones won't do that can anybody suggest a router that will?

Nope, my 585v6 doesn't have the power to control bandwidth between clients on my network.

I currently use a Linksys WAG54G but the wireless part frequently drops out for no apparent reason. Have you had any similar problems with the ST585v6?
