View Full Version : Relaying via POP SMTP
(I think that is what it is called  )
With my present ISP, Plusnet, I can send via my o2 email account (username@o2.co.uk) by putting "relay.plus.net" in Outlook's outgoing server box.
Will I be able to do the same with ADSL24's SMTP server and will I need to use "a different to the usual" server name?

The sender's address can be anything you like with Adsl24's SMTP server.
I'm surprised that any ISPs allow relaying these days, given the potential for abuse.
Ircsum.
Properly why plusnet mail servers keeps crashing, open relay mail server is asking for trouble
And thats why Im going to thank those hre for reminding me of this fact and we will be making steps to stop this asap because it opens the server up to fake spam emails etc.

As authentication is required for SMTP, I wouldn't have thought that was much of a risk. I'm not against things be tightened up though, as long as those of us who use our own domain names are remembered about.
Those will not be effected Tim.

Very sensible move, Brian.

Does this mean that I can not now use my ADSL24 account in Outlook on a laptop to send mail when using someone else' phone line?
(I understood - dimly - that Plusnet allowed relaying but only on the user phone line as they don't use authentication whereas ADSL24 could allow relaying safely from anywhere as they do use authentication)
Is webmail now the only way to send ADSL24 email when away from home?
(I also understood that spammers no longer bother looking for with OPEN relays as everyone blocks these)

No, as Adsl24 uses SMTP authentication, you should be able to use any connection to send email via their SMTP server. An open relay will allow anyone to send email through it without any form of authentication.

Use any connection? Send mail via another provider connection using adsl24 email login authentication details is that possible.
At present I am with Plusnet (part way through migration.) I can send from Outlook, using ADSL24 email servers addresses, to any email address.

Yes, because Adsl24 uses SMTP authentication.
