I have been with adsl24 for about one month now, and I have been speed testing my line on and off and I find that the readings differ from 6333 to as low as 1700.
the 6333 was taken this morning at 0800 and the low I have just taken at16.30.
are the low readings because of volume of use

Yes...you will find that from 22:00-8:00 mon/fri and weekends, people will be making use of their 300gig usage.
If you look here (http://noc.enta.net/) you should find that in most cases your speed will mirror the Central you are on (http://tools.entachoice.org.uk/central.cgi), plus any exchange congestion.
