Hello, for the first time since coming to ADSL 24 I am experiencing some speeed troubles.

Basically we had an extension built. Prior to the extension my broadband line went from th phone socet in my room, into the router in my room where the connection was rosy. It then went into my brother's room via an extension cord and his connection was still okay, despite the extension cord.

Now we have an extension, I have moved into the extension room, where we had a phoneline put in, I now follow the same procedure but in a new room. The broadband line goes from the phone socket in my new room into my router and into my computer. This seemed to be working fine, however over the day or so my speeds have been woeful. I checked my router and it said I was connected at:

downstream 160kbps
upstream 240kbps

Now that is pretty appalling, and I figured that it may be the fact that the new phone line is dodgy. So I set up my broadband connection in my old room exactly how it was before. Thankfully I get a connection speed of:

DownStream Connection Speed 7616 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 448 kbps

However this does not equate to actual speed, speed tests still indicate me as having:

Speed Down 124.02 Kbps ( 0.1 Mbps )
Speed Up 376.00 Kbps ( 0.4 Mbps )

and they are the same on both computers, one with a normal connection and the other with a long extension one.

Apologies for the long post, any help would be appreciated!

Quick update, bt speedtest states:

IP profile for your line is - 135 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 7616 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 115 kbps

I am taking a complete guess at what the problem is here, but could it be that when I switched phone socket to this apparently awful one in the extension room, it altered my BT profile, meaning that even whilst I go back to my old phone socket where I get 7000+kbps my profile is still stuck at the awful 116kbps?

Yep, that's because it takes 3 days for the profile to update.

That new extension you put in is either faulty or you have filtered it where it shouldn't be. If you leave it on the current socket. Looking at the fact your upstream was low too (should be 448) it appears you have plugged the further extension line into the phone part of a filter which will kill the ADSL signal.

If in your normal socket you get:

DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 7616 kbps(DOWN-STREAM

And your new one you get:

DSL connection rate: 240kbps(UP-STREAM) 160 kbps(DOWN-STREAM

then that's why your profile went to 135k and you are seeing slow speeds.

Cheers, that's what I suspected. Just a case of waiting 3 days with ISDN speeds then :(

One last question, would it be faster to have a long wired connection (from Router to computer) or a wireless one? My room is going to be quite a way away from the router so want the fastest connection possible.

Thanks for the help :)

If you get a good wireless signal from router to computer, then you should not see a loss in broadband speed, but obviously cable will give you gauranteed connection.
