Microsoft fixes 20 security holes

Windows users are being urged to install Microsoft's February security update which contains 12 patches for 20 vulnerabilities.
The bumper package includes fixes for loopholes that malicious hackers are known to be already exploiting.

Another vulnerability is in the program Microsoft designed to spot viruses and spyware that has infected PCs.

Half of the patches in the update have been rated as critical; criminals exploiting these could take over a PC.

The fixes were issued as part of Microsoft's regular monthly security update that falls on the second Tuesday of every month.

Loopholes in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet Explorer and Microsoft's Malware Protection Engine are closed by the updates in the patch. Versions of these programs used on Windows 2000 and XP could have these loopholes.

Users worried that they are at risk are being encouraged to check information about which programs are vulnerable via Microsoft's security site.

Some of the loopholes, particularly those in Word, have been actively exploited by malicious hackers for several weeks.

Many Windows XP owners are likely to get the patches automatically, but
any user can download the patches from the Windows Update site.
The "critical" rating usually means that a cyber criminal exploiting such a vulnerability could take over a PC via a booby-trapped webpage or by tricking a user into opening an attachment on an e-mail.
None of the patches affected Vista - the newest version of the Windows operating system which was released on 30 January.

Worrying eh? Probably a good idea to rush out and buy a copy of Vista before a lot of little XP niggles and incompatibilities co-incidentally appear in IE, Media Player and Office!

An easier way to patch microsofts applications/software vulnerabilities such as word and outlook etc. is don't use it get alternative freeware apps /progs like open office and firefox thunderbird etc etc :).

Because I have noticed lately that some of these microsoft updates are actually changing the configuration of some apps/progs on my system and trying to take more and more control over what I can and cant do with my own PC.

This is the opinion of a normal everyday PC user not a techy but doesn't that make up the majority percentage of PC users?

I would avoid going to vista atm there are driver issues for hardware and software compatability problems to so if you do want to move to it i would suggest making sure you have already got all the drivers and software patches downloaded before moving.

as for it being more secure i suggest googling it

i tried vista and moved back to xp due to all the grief i was getting. it also made my duo e6600 clocked to 3.6ghz with 4gb ddr2 pc800 mem run 20% slower than with xp pro. all the drm rubbish eat up cpu time an mobo bandwidth. hell of a waste of 130 quid. hopefully vista sp1 will fix these issues but i am not going to hold my breath
