James,
Looks great. Anything nowadays over 5M pixels will produce good enough photos to print out up to A3 size. Similar in spec to my new Panasonic DMC-FZ8 which I recently purchased online at a bargain price from a different retailer, despite working in sales at a well known high street electrical store! (think spicey food!!). I love the 12x Optical Zoom on mine (like the Canon) and got some superb photos over Lake Windermere when we visted it last weekend. Turn off any extra Digital Zoom though on the camera as you will reduce quality considerably when using Digital Zoom.
Bought two 4Gb SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) memory cards from 7dayshop.com last week. I use one for just Movie shots (Video Footage) and one for just photos onto which I can get over 1000 photos at 7M pixels! I see the Canon also takes these cards so if you fancy one take a look here:http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_6&products_id=102082 It's gone down another 50p since I bought them and considering there are around £40 in our shop, this is a bargain price. Although it looks like a "noname" brand online, when I received mine they were factory sealed in a blister pack and made by Dane-Elec. They were recognised by my camera straight away with no need to format the card. For your information James, the packaging lists card capacity for an 8M pixel camera at approx. 768 photos on higest resolution. The card is a High Speed Class 4 card (118x) so there is very little delay in writing to the card by the camera.
I also purchased a SDHC USB card reader so no messing about with cables when I want to transfer pictures onto the PC. Can't go wrong at under £3! Here is the link: http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=777_5&products_id=102820
Anymore info you need just ask!

Yeah , it is bit late now :)
I like the look of the S5, I've always been a fan of the Canon Powershot digicams in their various guises. We have a A710is at the moment (previosuly an A80, until it was stolen, but we Ebayed one for my Daughter, and a second camera). I really like the IS. Though a friend of mine who is very much into photography reckons he prefers the images from our 710 to the S5.
Yep, it's worth getting fast memory cards. It's nice now that memory cards are so cheap, you really don't have to worry about not having enough space - just buy another one. though I'm always torn by getting a big one as to a couple of smaller ones. losing a big one, or it getting damaged means you might lose all you phots from trip say.
I nearly always use card reader. I suffered card file corruption once when the batteries ran out, and i'm always bit worried about knackering those little usb sockets

I've found http://www.dpreview.com/ to be a good site for digital camera reviews.
I used that and Steves Digicams site to make my choice :D

Actually looks like a great camera, especially for the money...:)
It is what I do but I am afraid I do not know that much about compacts, only dSLRs and I am a Nikon man myself. Not much use, sorry :)

Canon do some nice stuff. A friend of mine is a pro photographer and has just been given £4000 worth of kit by Canon to review.
I'm up for that if they want to give me some too :D
Camera pr0n, may buy this baby if I can justify it :D

I've not looked at the specs for your camera James, but assume it supports SDHC format cards? (High Capacity!) Pretty soon we're gonna be getting some BIG memory storage for cameras etc, HC supports upto 2048GB or something!
A word of warning to other people, don't go buying SDHC if you only have an SD rated device, they're not backwards compatible, as I found out when I went to stick my shiny new 4GB card into my Ipaq... or My my laptop, or anything else I have as far as I know... Now ordered a USB reader (SDHC) so at least the card has a use, and a 2GB non HC card that I *know* will work :)
Oh, and SOME (not all apparently) SDHC devices will read standard SD, and some won't, just another little piece of info that I myself was not aware of until recently.

Hi Steve.
Yes, I recently got two 4Gb SDHC cards from 7Dayshop.com for my new Panasonic DMC-FZ8 Camera. See my earlier post for details: Earlier post (http://adsl24.co.uk/forum/showpost.php?p=26824&postcount=3) Card holds 1113 photos at 7M pixels, which I think should be enough. :D I use the second card just to store movie clips on.
Also got a card reader from them for under £3 that supports SD and SDHC cards. Just tried it with my recent "Windermere" snaps and it works great. Plug card into adaptor and then pug adaptor into a free USB port and transfer photos onto PC. So much easier than messing around with cables!
I was going to start a new post to ask the following question, but as this one is titled "Anyone know much about cameras?", putting it here hopefully should get a response.
I've bought a spare rechargeable LION battery to go with my camera (780 mAh capacity) along with my original battery (710 mAH capacity). I'm off abroad on Sunday for 7 nights and wondered if I really need to take my battery charger with me as I want to keep luggage down to a minimum.
Does anybody have any ideas whether the above two batteries would be sufficient to last out the weeks usage without needing a recharge, or would you suggest packing the charger "just in case"?

Well I would certainly pack the charger, becuase:
1. I would hate to be missing out on photos
2. We shoot lots of piccies, even more so on holiday etc. so there is a good chance that we'd use up the cahrge.
However, this is really a 'piece of string question' isn't it. as much depends on your likley useage (only you know that) and on how many photos you get on a fully charged battery.
One of the reason i like cameras that take AA's - if I run out of charged batteries I cana lways use disposables in an emergency (or buy a cheapo charger) - Though I would still packa charger, even though a couple of sets of charged AA's would should me a week normally
Thanks for the reply Gargoyle.....I think I'll pack the charger just in case! I tested out my second card this afternoon with some Video footage. Good enough quality recording at VGA 640 x 480 30fps - It will record for only 15 continuous minutes at a time which is more than long enough. It used just over 1 gig of space on the card for the 15 minute test, I reckon I could get nearly an hours worth of footage on the 4 gig card. So it works out as a cheap camcorder for me as well, even if the quality isn't up to DVD standards, it will do for holiday memories.
