Brilliant news I have received my mac code this morning from, yes you guessed it, tiscali, or shall i say twascali.

So I had better ring whoever it is and get all this sorted out.

Never migrated before so to be honest, don't know anything about really.

Yes I will ring Brian as soon as I have learned more about my Sagem modem from tiscali.

Can I just go and buy another modem and install it now, just want it simple.

No other wires and such just replace it.

Yes or better still get a router.

Good news, raceylady. :)

If it's a USB modem I'd really advise getting a router. I use a SpeedTouch 585, which has wireless. There are plenty of other makes/models that others may recommend.

Can I get a router that is not wireless.

Try: http://www.dsldepot.co.uk

If you buy a router that has the wireless facility, then that option can be turned off until you need it and its there if or when it is called for in the future.

Sure...I think the non-wireless equivalent of the 585 is the 546, equally good.

can the wireless 585 be used with wires? silly question but i have a wifi stereo connected to my pc and am concerned that the router will interfere?!

Sure, it's a 4-port wired router, basically, just the wireless added on.

The wireless can be disabled if you're worried about it. Needs to be done by telnet, though, AFAIK.

Ant,

You'll be able to use a different channel on the router, so it will not interfere with your wi-fi stereo. I have a wireless video sender and originally had some interference between the receiver and the wireless router (even when not using a wireless enabled PC/Laptop). Swapped the router over to channel 6 and the wireless video sender to it's 4th channel (dip switch numbered 1 - 4) and now I only get interference when the laptop is actually being used in the same room and that's simply down to the laptop's wireless card. It only gets used when that particular TV's switched off anyway so it's not an issue for me.

I like the Netgear DG834G myself, easy to use setup wizard, and good browser interface to configure advanced options.

Got five on the go at present, with work, friends and family.

To disable the Wireless just untick a box in the browser interface.

That's the same router I have and it's the only make & model of router we will purchase for remote workers @ work. No matter what router they already have (BT Home Hub, etc) we force their department to purchase one of these routers through us as we know they are reliable and that they work flawlessly with the remote access solution we offer.

We currently have over 30 "out in the field" with only 1 failure and that was due to a power surge.

Netgear are a goor router as well as Vigor but harder to manage for the average home user.

My fav is Cisco ;)

Netgear hard to manage?

If you want a hard to manage home router try a Linksys.

Good if you know what you're doing - nightmare if you don't.

But thats Cisco for you.

I'll be phoning AOL over the weekend to get my MAC code, and then I'll migrate to you guys.

My line will support about 4mb, and I currently use a Speedtouch USB modem, which has been fine, and can handle the speed of my line without any problems.

I see that you recommend a router, but what advantage would that give over the USB modem in my situation, as I probably wont get any more speed?

Cheers

Cor what did I start here. I only wanted to know a simple replacement for my tiscali sagem modem. :)

And if its very easy to replace my sagem. Very new to all this technology.
Can I just unplugged my sagem, and plug in another usb modem and will it work. Something very simple to get me migrated here, and then I can get more involved, one step at a time please.:D
