View Full Version : How does ADSLMax test period work?

Hello,

I migrated today!! Very pleased indeed to get away from the last ISP.

I've already noticed a brilliant change in the latency, back down to 20ms!!!

But could someone explain how the test period for ADSLMax works?

Previously i was on a fixed speed so this is the first time ive been on max and my speed is currently at 256kb/256kb.

Is this set to change over time? How long would you expect for me to wait before getting faster speeds?

Thanks for the help,
Alex

There is a 10 day training period Im affraid.

alexlindley
16/02/2007, 16:12
Thats no problem.

What am i to expect, the speed to jump all over the place for the next 10 days?

Realist
16/02/2007, 16:23
Correct, it will be up and down.

alexlindley

Will the connection to my previous ISP be "up" until I tell them to cease the connection and stop billing me?

Cheers.

Didn't you have to give your old ISP notice you were leaving?

Tell them right now you've left, anyhow. The old connection overlaps with the new (either is usable) for a short period, generally a few days, I understand. If you're paid up to date with the old ISP and you gave the required notice, be sure to stop any further DD or CC payments.

I also migrated to entanet/adsl24 on the 15th and i'm currently getting

DownStream Connection Speed 2464 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 192 kbps

umm the upload seems low, will it also go up once it stablises?

Hi Guyver, welcome to Adsl24. What speedtester is reporting those results?

Guyver

Hi Guyver
I think Tim didn't relise that these are your connection speeds on the Router page. What package did you go for?

Cliff:) .......Welcome to ADSL24:D

I'm on the Home Max Allowance 30 - £19.99. I hope the upload speeds up during this training period.

tboorman
16/02/2007, 23:24
OK, I agree the upload figure doesn't look right then. Have you tried rebooting your router (don't do it too often though)?

Guyver
16/02/2007, 23:27
I only rebooted once to enter my entanet login details when my previous isp didn't work.

I have the same package and also use a Netgear router. This is the line profile i have after the 10 day training period.

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8128 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 25.0 db 12.5 db

Your Line Attenuation 58 db seems high, this maybe why your connection speed may be low.

tboorman

OK, give a reboot of your router a try. Wait until the daytime though, as there's less noise on most (but not all) people's lines then.

could you enter your details here and see what it says about your line

Enter phone no

then when it shows details ...select BT ADSL
see what it says about what your line will support.

Ask Brian about switching interleaving Off..You should have a connection speed of 8128 kbps. have you tried pinging www.jolt.co.uk or www.bbc.co.uk
to see what your ping is.

Hi,
does giving your mac code to a new isp automaticaly cancels old isp, from the connection date, or nearest monthly payment ?

including billing ?

Doooh never moved before::::::::::

Most ISP's start the 30 day notice when MAC is given.. then when you go live with your new ISP any refunds owed are calculated.

Cliff:)

I can't ping from cmd as the router firewall blocks it so I get 100% packet loss, but doing it from the actual router gives me 20ms to bbc if that's any use?

Someone else mentioned interleaving to me too so I'll look into that, thanks :)

20ms WOW... If your download speeds are good, i would'nt bother

@ surfer_chick: Interleaving is probably costing you 9 ms in latency, not to mention the 512 kbps in download speed. I get 11-12 ms to the BBC since interleaving was taken off. The only question is - why did you get interleaved in the first place? Your line stats are great.

What's interleaving and where can i find if i have it?

My ping seems pretty good (20-25ms). Much better than the last isp anyway.

Still hoping the trail period up's my speed from 256kb. I've restarted the router a few times and it still rekons I have 576k up and 288k down, but this is what i had set by my last isp.

From reading that it would seem that its best to not have interleaving on?

tboorman
17/02/2007, 12:55
It depends on what you use your connection for - if you're into gaming or use VoIP, then it's best for it to be off.

alexlindley
17/02/2007, 14:07
Would you expect my router (Linksys WAG354G) to show the speed as BT test out my possible MAX speed?

Its been on 576/288 from before i migrated and hasnt changed yet even though im getting 256kb/s.

tboorman
17/02/2007, 14:17
Normally you would expect to see quite a number of resyncs during the training period for your line.

Can anyone tell me how you find out if you have interleaving on?

tboorman
17/02/2007, 20:46
You need to find what your router is reporting your Downstream Path Mode as - you might need to use the CLI to do this. If it's shown as Fast, interleaving is off.

alexlindley
17/02/2007, 20:53
My "DSL Path Mode" is shown as FAST. I guess that must mean its off then! I don't know whether thats a good thing or a bad thing! :)

Do you think this has anything to do with my line currently connecting at a pretty slow speed of 256kb/s?

tboorman
17/02/2007, 20:59
You don't need interleaving on unless your router is reporting a lot of uncorrected errors.

What is your Attenuation and SNR reported as?

alexlindley
17/02/2007, 21:12
My attenuation is:
Downstream Line Attenuation : 22
Upstream Line Attenuation : 11

Does SNR go by any other names?

I have these too if they mean anything:
Downstream Margin : 31 db
Upstream Margin : 27 db

tboorman
17/02/2007, 22:09
The Downstream Margin is your SNR - given your low sync speed, a figure of 31 dB doesn't look right. Try rebooting your router during the day tomorrow, and see whether your sync speed and SNR changes.

tboorman
17/02/2007, 22:13
Looking at your sync speed again, I'd say you're on a fixed 512 kbps product rather than a MAX product - I'd recommend you raise a support ticket for this to be checked out.

alexlindley
17/02/2007, 22:17
a fixed 512 kbps was what i was on with my previous ISP.

Its now running at 256kbps.

I only migrated yesterday, so could the 10day test period be to blame for this?

Interestingly my router thinks im connected at 512 kbps.

Cheers for the help here too.

tboorman
17/02/2007, 22:21
It's more likely to be yet another BT mix up to blame. I'm fairly certain you're still on a fixed rate product - put all the details of your sync speed and SNR into a support ticket, and hopefully it'll be sorted out quite quickly.

Realist
17/02/2007, 22:22
Ummm could be a stuck profile, nothing new. Problem is BT will not touch it until the 10 days are up.

tboorman
17/02/2007, 22:26
It doesn't look like a stuck profile though. Given the sync speed and SNR, it looks like Alex has not been moved to a MAX product.

alexlindley
17/02/2007, 22:59
Ok, thanks for the help tboorman.

If i put my details into a ticket does that then go to BT?

Like Brian says, will i have to wait until the annoyin 10 day period is up?

alexlindley
17/02/2007, 23:05
Also, how do i raise a ticket?

I personally think this is the same thing I am getting. My download speed hasnt once gone over 850kb/s since migrating here on the 13th. I was getting 950kb/s on a 1mb fixed product previously on my old isp with the same hardware this end. I'll wait until this Friday before getting the anger drums out, until then i'll be blogging quietly and thinking happy thoughts... mostly.

alexlindley
19/02/2007, 10:55
Im stuck on 256k! Its painful :)
I've got no idea how dial-up people cope!!

Brian, do you think ADSL24 will look at my case?

Do I start paying for the service when the connection is sorted or did my pay date start when I migrated?

tboorman
19/02/2007, 11:35
You need to ask Brian to contact Entanet for you, or you can phone Entanet's Help Desk directly on 0870 224 3494.

alexlindley
19/02/2007, 12:06
Cheers Tim,

Are Entanet an ISP or do they just supply the equiment and ADSL24 are the user interface.

Brian, would it be best you contacting them to try and get some action or do you think I might be able to get something done about it?

Thanks,

Have you had any word back from BT/Entanet regarding my problem of being stuck at 256kbps, its been a long week! :)

Cheers for that Ircsum, that seems to be exactly my problem.

I was on a 512K fixed line and that went down to 256K when I migrated last Friday (although my modem still says its connected at 512).

When I was on 512 I didnt seem to have a problem and the BT site suggests that I should be able to receive 1mb connection?
