Ok I have been looking at this router to install and take over from my sagem modem.
Bear with me I'm a total greeny here for installing a router or a modem in fact.
Can anyone very simply please explain how I actually install this into my pc and get rid of the the tiscali sagem modem.
What is an Ethernet cable?
I dont want wireless so I think this router is what I need.
I really need to do this before I migrate over to adsl24.
Thanks.:)
What is an Ethernet cable?
Hi Racey
An ethernet cable connects your pc to the router. Check your pc to make sure it has an ethernet card fitted (it is also called a Network Interface Card) most newish pc's have them fitted as standard equipment.
To confuse the issue, the cable is also called an RJ45.

What do you have listed under Network adapters in Device Manager (right click on My Computer, click on Properties, click on the Hardware tab, click on the Device Manager button)?

What's listed under Network adapters (click on the + sign next to it)?
The dell E520 has Integrated 10/100 Network Card, it’s not a pci card
It would normally be located next to the usb ports on the back it’s a square hole

It says
Intel(R) 82562V 10/100 Network Connection
USB ADSL WAN Adapter
this might help you...

doesn't look as if I have one then. Oh dear
So does this mean I cannot install this router.

The "Intel 82562V 10/100 Network Connection" suggests you do have a network card.

I've confirmed that your PC does by looking on the Dell website:
http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/dimen_e520?c=uk&l=en&s=dhs&cs=ukdhs1
Quite right Tim 10/100 is ethernet.
The socket will be on the back of your pc.......I'll go and look for a piccy and post it here.......if I find one
Look at this picture and you will see number 7. This is the netword card thats built into the PC.
If you have a seperate card the socket will look very similar indeed.
Look at the 2nd picture it gives a close up view of a socket at the rear of a laptop, but they all look the same.
The 3rd picture shows you the markings that should be next door to the socket of the network card.
And the last pic shows you what a network cable looks like.
Regards,
Ya beat me to it Brian :p

Right thanks for that, I will have to have look at the back of my server for this and get back to you.
So all being well I can install this modem/router to my pc.
Do I need both the ethanet cable and the RJ11 connected to my pc.

The ethernet cable has an RJ45 plug at each end - one end connects to your PC, and the other end connects to your ADSL router. There is another cable that goes from your ADSL router to your splitter - this has an RJ11 plug on it.
Racey
If you get yourself a ST585 from DSLDepot for £30, it will come with all the cables, plus at least one micro-filter and set-up/software CD

So is the 585 a better one than the 546.
As I dont necessarily want the wireless one. And these are very simply to install, I wont loose my BB connection. And once I have installed the speedtouch can I simply uninstall my sagem tiscali modem.
Sorry to be a pain, I'm still new to this and very much still learning.
The 585 is far more popular than the 546 (no experience with that one)
The 585 can be tweaked with DMT,
Having wireless capabilities does not mean you have to use a wireless set-up, it can be disabled, but its always there if you need it. The 585 has four ethernet ports, so, should you wish to use another PC on the same internet connection, you can do so easily (wired or wireless)
Once the Speedtouch is running the Sagem can be sold on eBay, cos you won't want it again beleive me ;)
Easy enough to set up, just make sure you use the CD first for instructions, and follow them exactly, do not plug the router in to start with, the wizard will tell you what to do next.
Another must is to have your login details written down and also the DNS addresses too which should have been e.mailed to you with confirmation of your migration, from ADSL24.
Once you are connected again, just ask on here for any advice you need on the apparent gobbledygook showing on the 585's interface. It will become second nature to check your router stats every now and then
Setting up your connection through the 585 should only take a minute or two.
Good luck and be brave ;)
Dont need the DNS details only the username and password. The DNS details will be automatically generated when connected.
Regards,
True.....I stand corrected, but I seem to remember putting the DNS details in manually on mine :)
I Could be wrong though.

So I can set up and install this router while my sagem is still connected is that correct, and then uninstall the sagem.
My login details I assume are my username and password, as I would do this before leaving tiscali so I get used to it a few days before migrating here.

You can indeed. I've left my old USB modem installed, although unplugged, as I was having issues with a router at the time and using both devices, depending on what I was up to. You could always enter your Tiscali details and use the router for that till you move across to ADSL24.

Just a very quick question here is the 585 (i) V6 the same model.

Hi raceylady
If you look at my old post (http://www.adsl24.co.uk/forum/showpost.php?p=1483&postcount=18) I found that your Dell E520 come's with the ethernet built on the motherboard (all new computer over the last 2 years have this feature). The post has a link to buy the 585 V6 for £16.99 +PP.( its now CHEAPER)
The wireless you can switch off. the rest of the features will be the same.
For this price its worth a try....Plus nearly everyone seems to have them, so advice on setup would be easier to find.
Cliff:)
Go to the wireless section on the link speedtouch 585 V6

.............Yes, same as the one I have
The (i) stands for "injection"
The V6 means its a good old engine

Definately is a great deal cheaper than other places, is this company quite reputable cliff, I think I will get myself one today, and get it installed, hopefully, I assume the set up would be as you install it, as I dont want the wireless, so I would assume I can click and disable that on installation.
Thanks a lot you good people, and then I can ring Brian and get myself migrated over, whoopppee.
Hi Racey
A lot of people on various BB forums have bought ST585's from DSLdepot, myself included, no probs and if you don't wish to use wireless, then you don't...simple.
Go for it ;)

Right I have done it my Speedtouch 585 is on its way, then I expect my nightmare will begin, just hope its easy, for an idiot like me anyway.
Get this installed and sorted and then Brian I will be ringing you to migrate, and then your nightmare will start.:)
Brian thrives on nightmares! :D
Ircsum.
A dangerous step! Don't you realise that routers are for Real Men Power Users and that wimmin and wimps (like me) are supposed to use USB modems? Now you will have to join in conversations about de-militarised zones and port forwarding- not to mention the geek make-over.
(... and I hate you because they have dropped the price by £10 since I bought mine three days ago!)
Can I join in please.
I was thinking of buying a Speedtouch 585v6 from DSL Depot after a recommendation from my mate greyrider.
I see they also do a Speedtouch 716g, which seems to have a similar spec but also offers Voice Support, which kind of interests me.
Has anybody any experience of the 716g please.

haha bully for me:D
USB modems are great if you use just one PC, don't want wireless or VoIP. They are so compact and so simple to set up.
Thomson SpeedTouch 330 USB ASDL Modem has been popular for many years. Must be millions of these about.
Upto 8 Mbps down, 832 Kps upstream. Good for ADSL Max.
Some oulets charge £19 or more but only £3 at DSL Depot
eBay has many used ones for as little as £1.

I am also interested in a SpeedTouch 716g. But apparently there are many versions.
I phoned DSL Depot but the lady there could not tell me if it is ADSL only or if it is also capable of ADSL2 and ADSL2+

Many thanks Tim and Brian :)
Not being familiar with routers and their specs, I got confused when I saw:-
under 'Hardware'
• 12 Mb/s connection rate
but then
under 'ADSL Compliance'
• Maximum Rate: 24 Mb/s for downstream and 3 Mb/s for upstream
Since post by Tim suggest that it is also capable of ADSL2 and ADSL2+, I placed an order just now.
You got to know what you want when buying from DSL Depot; cos sales persons there lack product knowledge. Yesterday, a lady there told me it is revision 5 so only good for ADSL. Today I was told it is 20 Meg !!
It is 'B' Grade (what ever that is) so only 30 days warranty and no support.
But can't go too far wrong at the bargain price of £29 incl VAT & delivery.
After DSL Depot messed up my order, I found a nearly new 780WL at eBay for few pounds more than the obsolete 716g.
On its way to me via Royal Mail Next Day Delivery Service.

I have ordered a Thomson ST 585 v6 too, from DSLDepot, and it was priced at £19.99, can't wait for it to arrive to have a play around with it.
I have already got a Thomson USB adapter for it, 121g wireless, are there any others that are guaranteed to work with the ST 585v6 ?
Or should you always buy the same brand for wireless adapters?
