I would have thought just removing the battery for a few mins would work.

Hi
Do you mean the battery on the motherboard?
Mike
Yes that's the cmos battery, try unplugging the pc from the mains. Remove the battery, hold down the power button for 5 seconds to remove any power from the motherboard and after 10 mins replace the battery and power up.
Worth a try mike, it wont do any harm.

Hi
Ok will give it a go and fingers crossed.
Thanks
mike
Good luck, that happened to me last year and that cured it for me, so here's hoping it's the same problem.
Good Luck :)

OK, when you say it won't come out of power save mode- what do you mean exactly ? - other than the screen is not coming on.
I think you might mean that the machine is not actually booting up properly - which could be down to various things. does it sound like it might be booting up (beeping as normal, HDD doing it's normal things, lights flashing?) If it is is he able to hook it up to another screen?
If still the same (or not able to) then I would next check inside the machine. Are fans working properly (esp. if there is one on the graphis card) Check connections (I had dodgy Molex once that stopped the booting up - and killed a hdd as well whie it was at it... make sure the PC is switched off at main before checking these). remove/reseat cards that sort of thing.
If he desperately needs access to the files then hoik out the HDD, grab a USB enclosure from your local computer shop and stick it there and connect it up to another PC (friends, at work etc.)

Snoods
Please don't think this is personally having a go at you, but to clear the cmos on most boards, it involves a jumper somewhere near the cmos battery, no 10 minute wait, just power down, find a spare jumper to put on the cmos pins and leave there for 45 seconds.
I could be wrong but thats how it was on the last 3 computers i had.
Could be a Gfx card or monitor problem. Can you check by substitution?
