Hi
Just a quicky about sync speeds
I'm 80mtrs from the exchange as the crow flies (about 280mtres line length). My sync speed is 6720 snr 12.5 atten 2db.Surely I should be syncing at 8meg?
If yes then how do I sort it ?Not a major problem at the mo but any increase in performance is welcome when centrals get busy

before you begin, go to the ADSL24 control pannel and request interleaving be switched off... then when it has been done, 24/48 hours later, follow the instructions below.
first, unplug everything from your phone line.... EVERYTHING.
2nd, go around all your telephone extensions and disconnect any wires that are not connected to 2 and 5.
3rd, clean the connections on your BT socket, ADSL filter, and router. (I use a PCB cleaner)
connect your router back up and check your sync speed... if everything is ok, reconnect your telephones, sky box, alarms etc. do this one at a time, rebooting your router each time, check sync speeds...
hopefully if all goes well, you will sync at 8128, and 3 to 5 days later your IP profile will rise to 7150

Thanks SB
but I've tried all of that and more (new filters new cables, praying....) if it was noise I would have a poor snr but I don't.Seems to me like the dslam will not sync any higher for some reason. One for the techy types methinks:confused:

I suspect that for some reason your target SNR has been increased from the default of 6 dB to 12 dB, which means that your sync speed is not as high as it could be.

How would I get this corrected?
BT have been out twice and tested the line (for a seperate issue) and were happy
On such a close line to the exchange it should still see the full 8128 even with 12dB SNR left

Just to confirm what James said (if I've understood correctly!), as I'm only 800 metres from the exchange myself. Not as close as you though, FreeThinker... 2db attenuation downstream?! Jeez... :D
I sync at the full 8128 even though my SNR is a hair over 14 (used to be 15!). FWIW my attenuation downstream is 18.

Thanks for all your replys
sorry I've not responded more quickly but I've been on nightshift
As I understand it I should be syncing at 8 meg
As I am not what course of action is recommended?
1 Speak to BT ....Who they will not talk to you unless you are using them as your ISP.
2 Check hardware.....my router is new my old st330 was no better or worse and the live box I used for a couple of years was roughly the same.
3 Just live with it....I'm very happy with my present speeds, having no need for superfast downloads etc. but I would like to know what the problem is or rather the solution just out of curiosity (thankfuly I'm not a cat).
Just a footnote I did a resync at about 7.00am and am now at 6880.I don't think I will get a better sync without further action.

As I understand it the higher the snr the better so you have a better or less noisey line than me (If my memory serves me right an increase of 1db is a doubling of the level of of a sound)
Distance is not the main factor rather the environment and mechanical issues are ie if you live near a source of high energy radiation (near a radio transmitter for example) or your line has lots of jointboxes in it's path and is run overground you can pick up a lot of induced noise in a short path.
Attenuation on the other hand is purely down to cable length and type mainly due to it's resistance/capacitance to high frequency signals. So your figure of 18 would be about right (you can usually x3 for the "as the crow flies" distance to the exchange for the length of the cable)
So I'm at a loss to understand my problem, maybe an incorrect jumper setting in the exchange who knows?
ps my up atten is 0.5 :D

Higher SNR is better, but the higher the SNR usually the lower the SYNC. It's a trade-off between safety margin (still having a nice high, clear signal ratio) and SYNC/speed. With lines like ours (especially YOURS *green with envy* :p) it doesn't matter so much, but on a longer line you can play with the SNR to drop it and GAIN sync (but potentially lose some stability), or raise it and gain stability but LOSE some sync.
Luckily we don't have that worry :D I dunno what your fault is, but rest assured James won't rest until it's sorted ;) Good luck mate :D

Thanx :)
Is James looking into this or do I need to raise a ticket?
Just as an aside you don't think Bt have set the snr high to throttle bandwidth on purpose do you? Nah! they wouldn't ......would they?

Have you tried connecting your router to the test socket at the back of the BT master socket?

No
Reason......I don't have one. It's the same mastersocket that was installed 15 years ago. When I first got broadband (via wanadoo) I asked the question about a new asdl socket and was told I did not need one as I have no extentions in the house just the BT master socket and 1 phone (via a filter). The BT engineer was out to my home last month and never commented on the lack of the NTE5 socket (i think thats what it's called) saying only that I should be able to connect with wet string on my line it was so good.:p:D

Fair enough. I'd suggest that you raise a ticket, and then ADSL24 can get BT to look into it.
