Well what a difference the hardware can make. I'd been using my often sluggish Billion Bipac 5100s and a couple of USb modems on and off and never got more than 0.5mb on my line but when I tested a router I'd bought for someone else who was going on to ADSL for the first time - with ADSL24 - I found for the first time I'd got about 1.2mb and now with a Netgear DG843G which a relative no longer needs - I get the same - so the speed has more than doubled.

It's not exactly 8meg but on my dodgy line it's a vast improvement.
