Hi, I upgraded my graphics card to an ATI X1950 Pro (AGP) and got a voucher to get Half Life 2 Deathmatch for free, which I've just installed and managed to connect to a server and promptly got killed! (which made my wife laugh).

After being killed I ran around for a while then disconnected from the server (Lincoln University) and tried to look for advice online but could not find a beginners guide anywhere. Is it a case of joining any public server and just shooting everyone or is there some etiquette I need to learn first. I didn't want to wade in on someone else’s game and start shooting away.

Any advice would be greatly received. I’ve been playing first person shooters for years but never online. Only got ADSL24 a few months ago, on dial-up before that, so online games are all new to me.

Many thanks,
Rich

I play CSS on line all the time the best way to learn is to play regularly but be aware there are a lot of cheats out there who will use hacks to win at any cost try and find a good server that is well run and you will find it is regularly busy.

I play on dadsarmyclan.co.uk

Thanks for the reply, played a few Deathmatch games and had a great laugh, just tried Team Deathmatch and all I did was spend the last hour getting killed.

What's CSS like to play, looks quite good from what I've seen. Just pre-ordered The Orange Box so hopefully will have a go at Team Fortress 2 next weekend if the post arrives!

Welcome to the HL2 Universe! My only advice for deathmatch is try to avoid getting hit by radiators and toilets ;)

I've played CS:S for (what seems like) a long time now and you might find that it's a bit less hectic and you'll survive a bit longer as long as you use your team mates as human shields or cower in corners! Listen to 2Beers tho - he knows what he's talking about, it CAN be cheat central!

TF2 is easily the best multiplayer game i've played in a long time, looks gorgeous and has enough quirks in it to help make each new game a joy!

My first kill with a toilet felt so good :D It's a great game and so is Team Fortress 2.

Managed to clock up 11.5 hours on TF2 since Friday evening (steam rating of 6.3 Oooh! Shiny!), mostly as a medic which is helping me get a feel for the layout of the maps. Also it's good to be in demand, someone always shouting for a medic.

Made a mistake of playing a Scout on a map I had never been on before, got the briefcase but didn't know were to run! Had someone swearing at me but after I explained that I was new to the map they appologised and told me to just have fun.
