After many years of allowing access to webmail for former customers Ukonline has decided to clear out redundant accounts.
There are 3 ways to keep the email active
1 Get UKO broadband - not an option really - ADSL24 for me.
2 Pay an annual fee of £14.99 for mail only service
3.Use their Dial UP to log in every 60 days or less.
Does anybody know of any way to use my existing ADSL24 to dial up and log in to Ukonline.
(Something like VOIP or FAX via Broadband)

you need a modem plugged into the phone line, and set it up to dial up to ukonline

Smarty, That is what I was looking to avoid.
I dont mind paying for the calls - just the inconvenience of using a modem .
I can do voice calls using VOIP over BB to normal phones. and there is software to send Faxes over BB to phonelines.
Surely a simple dial in over BB is possible.
Thanks

VOIP over BB get gatewayed to the normal POTS service to be able to dial out.
The software to send faxes over a broadband line surely sends them to a server which then dials out over a "normal line" to the fax number at the other end.

my answer ain't much help....but............ ditch the email address with them , buy a domain from somewhere like 1&1 or 123reg and then redirect the email address to your adsl24 one or gmail/yahoo/hotmail or both.
That way in future you will always be able to retain your email address

Exactly what I have done, I have also set up a copy/forward to my GoogleMail account just in case my ISP email account goes funny like ADSL24's did the other week for a couple of days.

Thanks for your thoughts,
Here are mine
I was lucky being one of first ukonline customers and as such was able to get
MyRealFirstname.MyRealFamilyName@ukonline.co.uk.
I also set up additional family member accounts in the format
TheirRealFirstname.MyRealFamilyName@ukonline.co.uk so it is not just my account which would expire.
Also Having had the account for so many years I have subsequently registered on many Commercial websites/Non commerce websites/forums/ etc.
Rather than try to change all my registration details,a daunting task just for the ones that I can remember, I find it much easier to retain the account.
At present I am doing what Smarty suggested i.e. Using a modem to dial up every 50 days. I also have a recurring appointment (reminder) set in Windows Calendar in case I forget.
I already own a domain running email and webspace on my ADSL24 account.
I just feel it should be technologically possible to acheive a Dial Up login via Broadband using some kind of 'SIPphone' technology and wondered if anyone here could point the way as to 'How'?
thanks,

I don't believe there is the technology available to do what you want. mainly for two reasons.
the way ADSL works is totally different to a normal telephone... its a bit like plunging a TV areal into a radio and expecting to watch tv.
possibly, you could make a call via a IP phone, but then you need a call service provider, on detection of a modem initialization tone to then reconnect the call via a modem... then routing the packets back to you....i just cant see that happening at all... and i don't even think it is possible....
the long and short of it, due to costs, the technology will never be developed to do what you want to do... the best and only option is what you are doing....
the way it is with switching isp's, I find the best plan is to have your own domain name. You then never have to change email addresses again... regardless of isp...
Apparently its possible if echo cancellation is disabled and if compression is not in use.. have a look here: http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/view/Modem+over+VOIP
But I've had a look on some other sites and alot people have tried and failed, as the VOIP system is designed to compress voice and in doing so corrupts the data connection.
Wait till ukonline takes it a step further , like my old ISP did. They made the only way to read your email was to dial up to them unless you held an adsl account with them or pay a £3.95 month charge.
I would recommend you start transferring things to new email addresses so within a few months all you receive on the old ones is junk.
The best thing I did was dump my old email address as all those useless newsletters etc disappeared. The ones I wanted I signed up too again. Also some of the commercial sites I got benefits - they thought iIwas a new customer and could get lots of discounts / introductory offers etc.

Maybe, maybe not, I've had an old PAYG Freeserve account, not used from the days when it was still Freeserve, I can still use this to access my mails with no problem. Either dialling up every now and then, or reactivating it over the web if I forget.
I could happily dump it, but it's useful to me to keep it going.
But yeah, it's worth the effort of moving stuff over to a domain when you can do it at your own speed, rather than being pushed into it by UKO
