Are you uploading them to the correct location I wonder?

They need to be uploaded to a location underneath the home/your_username/public_html/ directory, not the root

if say you have an image called avatar.jpg uploaded into the home/your_username/public_html/images/ folder then the url would be:

http://your_username/images/avatar.jpg

I placed them in the public_ftp folder inside another folder called myimages
What do you mean by home folder?I can't seem to find one called this.

It's named public_html, as Gargoyle mentioned. When you access your webspace via ftp you get to the root. You should see a folder there labelled public_html. That folder is the one you land in when you access the webspace via http (the http root), so your images should be tidily kept in a folder inside public_html.

Sorry I was unclear. I forgot that the presentation of the folders in the FTP client is a little different to that in the Hosting cPanel file manager. Where the 'root' of your webspace as seen in the FTP client is actually called /home/your_username/ (have a look in the file manager, it will make sense then).

Otherwise just ignore me ;) and find the public_html folder as describes by Ircsum

I have put an image called Sofa2.gif in the folder called public_html
I have tried to access it with the url http://username/images/Sofa2.gif & it says that IE cannot display this page.

You need to put the file in public_html/images not just public_html

If you go to http://username/Sofa2.gif it should show up.

Public_html is http://username

Am I sowing more confusion in my wake?

When I mentioned the folder /images it was just as an example, you can put them in any location you like, In /public_html as you have done or any subfolder(s) of your naming that you prefer.

Just modify the url suitably

At the risk of causing even further confusion...doh!.....the actual URL you should use to access Sofa2.gif in /public_html is (assuming your username is ICF):

http://icf.adsl24.co.uk/Sofa2.gif

I get a blank page when trying to access the URL above.

Well, the fact that - http://icf.adsl24.co.uk/ - Doesn't exist itself doesn't help..

What username are you using to log into with FTP? It'll be your ADSL24 account username, which is also your URL link.

http://yourusername.adsl24.co.uk/

Did you even try the link? Because it doesn't work! :p I don't think your ADSL24 account username is 'username' for some reason? ;)

No I realised that this was not a proper link.

I assumed that since ICF had they had it sorted, that the use of 'username' in the link was just a dummy use in place of their real username.
