View Full Version : Router connection slower than USB modem
Ok just joined, speeds up a little to around 760 max on my rubbish line though early days yet with training etc and upload is much better around 440k.
I still have the issue I've mentioned in another thread which while my USB modem is reliable and gives a reasonable speed (given my line) most of the time, whenever I switch to my Billion Router it is sluggish and noticeably slower - about half the speed around 300k download -
Now obviously seems something is not right with the router or it's config and I can try changing cables etc but i suspect I have had all this before with EFH which is why I tend to stick to the USB connection.
but I would like to have the Router working as well.
I will probably have a closer look at things but Any suggestions why it might give such a slow speed appreciated

Try a firmware upgrade for starters.

Is your sync speed with your router the same as that with your USB modem?
Is your sync speed with your router the same as that with your USB modem?
Probably not but how would I tell objectively?

Could you post the stats reported by your router and your USB modem please?
Could you post the stats reported by your router and your USB modem please?
Which stats ? Speeds? Do you want to suggest a suitable site (speedtest?) and I can record the results.

Ok the result for the http://test.speedtester.bt.com/ for the USB modem is
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 2000 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 736 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 598 kbps
Tried running it on the Router and it just times out - Action cancelled
The ADSLguide Thinkbroadband test for the USB modem :
Speed Test Results
Date 22/02/07 19:11:26
Speed Down 572.43 Kbps ( 0.6 Mbps )
Speed Up 372.47 Kbps ( 0.4 Mbps )
For the Router:
Date 22/02/07 19:09:09
Speed Down 261.29 Kbps ( 0.3 Mbps )
Speed Up 344.16 Kbps ( 0.3 Mbps )

The downstream DSL connection rate shown is very low. The stats I was after are the sync speed, attenuation and SNR reported by your router and your USB modem.
The upstream is OK, but the downstream is dire to say the least, and that 2000 profile is pants. Are you on the 10 day training or not?

Started on Tuesday , I assume so if they haven't already given up on me. Can't see much fluctuation in speed other than those posted. It's certainly never faster than 760k or so.

Does this help for the USB Modem stats?

Your downstream sync speed is very low at the moment, but it's not unusual for it to fluctuate a lot during the training period.
There is not a lot that can be done until your 10 days are up. Its a case of being patient. I must stress though, that you should not keep disconnecting, leave it alone. Every time you disconnect and re-connect, BT's equipment (DSLAM I think) will think its a dropped connection and will/may lower your profile to gain stability. Just leave it connected all the time and you should see an improvement in a few days.
Good luck ;)
Ok here's the only live stats I can find for the Router.

Thanks for your replies I will stick with the USB connection if that's OK - Extra speed would be great but I will be grateful just for a reliable connection at 512k at higher. Also the PPP light on the Router often goes off every so often as the line drops, that used to happen before which is partly why I stopped using it as it seemed so unreliable.
Here's hoping. and See how things are after the 10 days.
