View Full Version : High Packet Loss
Hi everyone,
I've been playing Second Life recently and the software keeps showing that I often have lots of lag. After reading about the causes, I downloaded a program called WinMTR. That shows me that I'm getting an average of about 40% packet loss to:
ironwood.dsl.enta.net
I have had recent problems with my connection speed due to noise, but that appears resolved now. My router now shows a downstream rate of 3360kbps, and ADSL24 show my SYNC speed as 2848 today, and I'm on the 2500 profile.
I don't know what's good or bad to be honest but 40% sounds pretty huge to me! What can I do about this please?
Thanks,
Geoff.
Hi Geoff
If you are seeing packet loss to "ironwood" then there is a line problem as ironwood is the gateway you are currently on. Have you tried leaving the router off for 10 mins to reconnect to another central and thus re-initiate the connection as we've got many users on ironwood with no problem at the moment.
I had a similar issue last night, ingame netgraph was reporting 3-8 packet loss...
A router reboot sorted it tho :D
<3 adsl24!!!
Thanks for the replies.
I've left the router off as suggested, and am now on 'Larch', but I'm still getting high loss, averaging about 25% at the moment.
Edit - Ok it's a bit later now. I've tried it to other addresses (should have done that before, but didn't think it would make a difference) and I get zero packet loss. So the problem is only when I use this address - data.agni.lindenlab.com - as my destination.
I'm surprised it makes a difference what address I'm actually ending up at. I also tried the same tests on another PC connected to the same router, and I get the same results - Although one time when going to the address I just quoted, it was giving me 60% packet loss!
Any ideas?
Geoff.
Hi,
I also use winMTR, I'm sure James will ask for some tracerts etc, so perhaps post them on here in the meantime?
Have you checked for the obvious spyware probs? Spybot & adaware...
Also a pathping might be useful:
From a cmd window:
pathping www.adsl24.co.uk

Well the problem seems to lie in the Telia network.
ISTR that there was specific such problem with routing to Linden labs earlier this year (have a Google for details?) - maybe this is a recurrence.
Nothing really that ADSL24 can do.
Aye, seems like the packet loss is occurring on hops that are outside ADSL24's control.
Is there noway of specifying UK servers for second life (not used\ played it before)?
I'm not aware of any way to specify which servers you use, but that doesn't mean there isn't a way of course. It isn't mentioned in the preferences.
I have been Googleing this a lot today, and high packet loss in Second Life is mentioned everywhere, and even Linden Labs themselves state that anything above 1% is bad, and above 10% is very bad. So I'm surprised they are the cause.
So even though the loss shows in the first step of the route between me and ADSL24, can a loss further down the line actually cause that? If so, I'm not sure how the WinMTR program helps, because it isn't then actually showing where the problem is surely? According to WinMTR there is a lot of packet loss later down the line with Linden Labs, which was something I assumed wasn't connected so didn't mention it.
Geoff.
Yes, the loss can be further down the line as it gets reported back to the gateway/router.

Ok thanks James. It's odd that one of the other posters in this thread got 0% to the same url, but if there's nothing wrong with the connection between me and ADSL24 then I guess there's nothing I can do about it.
Thanks for all the help in this thread,
Geoff.
