Is there any way a new isp can check to see how fast a connection a new customer will actually get before they sign up.:)

The only information they would have available to them is the same as that you can get from the Availability Checker at http://www.btwholesale.com/getbroadband.

Yep,looked at all those things, but i dont think they are much help or accurate.

tboorman
24/02/2007, 13:44
They're only a best guess. What's the problem exactly?

jockwav

Well at the moment i am with pipex, almost a year now it expires in may.
I only have a half meg and i have tried to get help from bt,they are not interested because its not them i use for isp.
Pipex are a waste of time trying to get help from their so called support, they said all they can try is upgrading me at a cost and a new 12 month contract.
Hell will freeze over before i re-new my contract with them.;)

What are your stats like?

jockwav
24/02/2007, 14:00
How exactly do you check that.

tboorman

There should be a status page somewhere in the web interface for your router.

jockwav
24/02/2007, 14:06
You mean this.

ADSLInternet SettingsType Fast WAN IP document.writeln("85.210.186.119"); 85.210.186.119 Statusdocument.writeln("No Defect");No Defect Default Gateway 62.241.161.228 Downstream UpstreamPrimary DNS Server62.241.163.200 Data rate (Kbps)document.writeln("576");576 document.writeln("288");288 Secondary DNS Server62.241.162.201 Noise margin (dB)document.writeln("19.3");19.3 document.writeln("24.0");24.0 Output power (dBm)document.writeln("16.2");16.2 document.writeln("11.6");11.6 Attenuation (dB)document.writeln("54.0");54.0 document.writeln("28.5");28.5

You're on a fixed 512 kbps product, not a Max one.

jockwav

So theoretically if i sign up here when the time comes i should improve on my broadband speed.

tboorman
24/02/2007, 14:22
Should do.

I'm not entirely sure what you're requesting, but you need to log into your web interface using http://192.168.0.1 to access your router settings :)

@jockwav: That output is difficult to read but, assuming I read it correctly and your downstream Attenuation & Noise Margin are 54 & 19.3 respectively, one calculation says the line is capable of 1536 kbps. If I've misread your numbers, then I'm off target.

You seem to be a fair distance from the exchange, based on the Attenuation. You really need to get your router stats when connected to the test socket at the back of the master socket, in order to eliminate any problems with extension wiring.

Ircsum.

Cut the bell wire anyway, remove the uncertainty, reduce interference, http://www.dslzoneuk.net/socket.php?type=html

My problem when I try that is that I don't even have any wires going to my master socket. The internal master socket is dead.

My problem i have discovered eventually with constant barrage of e-mails to pipex is as it turns out they put me on a fixed 5ook broadband speed.
When i signed up to them i should have got the 1mb which i asked for but never got and i also never got my talk plan either but i got that somewhere else anyway. But i am just off the phone to them as their e-mail wanted me to upgrade if i want more speed,as i said to them on the phone, whats the point of me sending you long e-mails over and over again explaining it all when you dont listen and just send out your silly standard replies.
I have now told them to forget it and the next time i phone them in april/may will be for a mac code end of story.

From looking at other peoples this looks bit sad all the test are saying i should get 4mb plus i would be happy with 3mb

DSLzoneUK distance test is saying i am 3.17km from exchange

Do these figure add up? I am now directly into my master socket

Sorry for jumping onto somebody else's posting;)

Could these figures get better with ADSL24:confused:

Have a look HERE (http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/linestats.htm) for a discription on line stats.
I would say that you would have a better chance of improving your line performance if you moved to ADSL24.
The DG834GT can use the DMT tool (http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=de&u=http://dmt.mhilfe.de/) for impoving your line stats. (select DMT v8.05)

The estimator at http://212.23.23.177/calc.htm gives an estimate of 4965 kbps based on your line stats, but it is not guaranteed to be accurate. You should almost certainly see faster speeds than you get currently though.
