Hi everyone, my ADSL24 connection just got set up today. I didn't migrate as I had to cancel my account with my old ISP to avoid charges etc so it's a new connection I guess.
Anyway, I see my Speedtouch 330 modem is saying connected at 128Kbps and wanted to know if this is just down to a training period or do I have a problem?
BT wholesale say I should get 3Mbps or faster, previously had 4.4Mbps with Orange then around half of that with Virgin (on a good day) . I expected at least 3Mbps but maybe I'm jumping the gun a bit. Any ideas?

I should think your going through the training process again so wait it out the 10 days and see if it picks up, also you would be better off connecting with a router rather than a modem, it would be more stable and speeds more reliable.
No, the training period does not affect the SYNC speed you get during the 10 days (if anything, it starts off high then drops as required, not starts of low then rises).
If it's only @ 128 kbps then there is either a line fault, or something as simple as there not being filters on all phone points, or the router is plugged in to the phone side of the filter...
Can you advise a little more of your setup? :)

Thanks the reply James, I'm using a SpeedTouch 330 USB modem at the moment (the same one I was using with previous ISP). I'm running the Broadband off a secondary socket. I only have one filter at the moment but have disconnected the other phone...maybe that's not enough though as both sockets are still connected?
I have taken the PC into the kitchen to connect directly to the main socket and even in the test socket under the face plate, still only 128Kbps.
Could it be a faulty filter or the fact that I only have one filter even though I only have one phone connected but two phone sockets? I kind of assumed that if only one phone was connected then the other socket didn't need a filter but maybe I'm wrong.
Thanks in advance
Well try taking out all Phones and go straight to master socket.
Take off the front of MASTER phone socket there is another Socket inside.
Plug it in there.
Is it possible your modem has unsuitable settings from your last (LLU?) ISP?
I'd be inclined to invest in a couple of XF1-e filters from ADSLnation and a router such as the Speedtouch 585v6. It would be useful if you could initially borrow a router from a friend to see if your modem is at fault, though.
Ircsum.
Let's check your Modem's Stat first if it does show us any thing! Do you know how to get this ADSL Sta of yours? Prior to doing this you have to connect your ADSL Modem at the BT Test Socket to isolate your internal wirings and their effects!

Thanks for the replies guys. btw, I've found my other ADSL filter now so both sockets have a filter.
@ Spuddy: yep, did that, no difference.
@ Ircsum: True the settings could be wrong I guess though they are all pretty standard with this modem. The set up disc was for the modem not for the ISP, meaning it was a SpeedTouch one not specific to the ISP. Can't borrow a router though.
@ Happy32: I'm not sure how to check the modem stat, I'm a quick learner though if you fancy explaining.
thanks again...
Have you tried connecting the modem to the newly found filter, or is it still connected to the original one? i.e. have you definitively ruled out the filter as the cause?

Ah, good point. I hadn't but I've now done so and still no difference.
I wonder whether it might be worth uninstalling the modem and reinstalling. That should rectify any possible issues with settings, right?
The line stats from the router would be good. It's not an incorrect setting as regardless of any router setting the SYNC speed would still be higher (normally, unless the router itself is at fault)
To get the line stats from the ST 330 modem, follow this:
If you do not have Dr. SpeedTouch installed, download it from: http://www.speedtouch.co.uk/downloads/330/dr_st_300.zip
Once installed, there should be a new system tray icon appear. Right click on the icon and choose Advanced then Write log file to disk. It will ask you where to save the file - choose your desktop for convenience.
Once the window disappears, double click on the file called drst.xml on your desktop to view your line stats.

Ok, I've installed Dr. Speedtouch. I ran diagnostics and it tells me that my system, the modem and ISP are ok but there's a problem with the internet. It guided me through the proxy settings and they all seem correct.
I assume you wanted me to post the Line stats so:

It means nothing to me but I see a few "failed" results.
Thanks in advance.
These lines are what we wanted :)
ReceiveAttenuation_dB 41
ReceiveMargin_dB 31
SendAttenuation_dB 22
SendMargin_dB 31
Layer1DownstreamMaxBitRate 128000
Layer1UpstreamMaxBitRate 64000
This tells us your line is not at fault, as the Receive Margin is very high (31dB) meaning the line is probaby capable of a lot more.
This points to a modem fault, or a configuration / setting issue on the modem drivers.

So reinstalling the modem might help?
Knowing my luck the modem will be faulty, even though it's only a month old
You really should be investing in a router - even this one would be a massive improvement and comes highly recommended - http://www.dsldepot.co.uk/product_details.asp?idProduct=809

Well if the modem really is the problem then I'm happy to replace it with a router.
I've uninstalled the modem and drivers, re-installed with fresh drivers, connected into a different usb port, nothing changed. This very same modem was giving me 2.3Mbps (when the ISP managed it) 2 weeks ago. I had different filters then though so I wondered if that made a difference.
Is there anything else it could be or is it fefinitely likely to be the modem?
Thanks for the help so far, it's refreshing to get proper customer service after the appalling attitude of certain big name ISP's. It's very much appreciated :)
You're welcome.
Do you have another PC/laptop to install the modem on perhaps?
What's odd is that on your activation day with ADSL24 I can see your line connected at just 2Mb - 23/11/2007 16:30:00 2272 kbps - but no reports since.
BT don't even supply a 128 kbps service - the minimum on ADSL Max is 160 kbps - strange,

James is right that your line Downstream is:
1) Layer1(should be the IP layer) is just capable of 128Kbps only,
2) but your corresponding Attenuation is 41db, which is even lower than mine, even your SNR is 31db which is loads to be played with.
I could understand that why you would have such a high 31db SNR downstream because some how you have been restricted to 128Kbps downstream only. As such it is quite strange as I have'nt seen this problem before from any users! Not being funny but are you absolutely sure that you have configured your existing ADSL Modem properly? Why do'nt you resetting it to its "Factory Defaults" and start to re-configurate it again to rule out any "left-over" misconfiguration parameters, if any, that might be from your previous ISP? Also does your USB2 device driver been installed properly, and have you tested it by connecting another USB2 device into it?
Finally, if all above came with no problems then may be, just may be, the corresponding BT LineCard that is connecting to your ADSL Modem device is FAULTY. This can only be proved by connecting yourself a NEW and known working ADSL Modem.

To be honest "Attenuation", "margin", "layer1" means nothing to me. I'm not a complete novice but it's something I never had to deal with before.
Yes James I do have another PC, or rather my wife does :) so I installed the modem on her PC, connected up and got... "connected at 128Kbps".
No Happy32 I'm not 100% sure about the configuration but having uninstalled the modem completely then reinstalled with new drivers I assumed that would be the case (always worth checking the obvious of course). Wifey's PC normally connects via my connection with an ethernet cable, so would installing the modem on hers for the first time ever mean that it's not a configuration "left over"?
I've ordered one of those SpeedTouch routers that James linked to, hopefully it'll arrive tomorrow. Fingers double crossed, eh? :D
Btw James, I saw that 2Mb speed thing at BT too. Funny thing is that I was getting 2.3 with Virgin a couple of weeks ago and before that up to 4.4Mb with Orange so the line should be capable of more than 2Mb anyway. I hope so.
Hope I'm not gonna get stuck with a 2Mb profile because of all this
thanks to both for the help
Brad
I know this sounds like a stupid question, but here goes anyway! Are you using the correct cable and plugging the modem into the correct filter socket i.e. the adsl socket, not the phone socket?
Are you using the correct cable and plugging the modem into the correct filter socket i.e. the adsl socket, not the phone socket?
Normally you can not do that even if you intend to because the ADSL filter port has a RJ-45 Ethernet Port, while the Telephone filter port has RJ-11 instead!

Stupid question maybe Tonys but often it's something stupid like that which we forget to check so it's worth asking. In this case though, yes it's connected correctly ;)
The good news is that I just received the router I ordered from DSLDepot less than 24 hours ago. Fast service. So now I'm gonna connect a router and see what occurs.
If I'm gone for the rest of the day I've found a new and novel way to screw that up too :D

That's why I also asked if the correct cable was being used ;). Sometimes it's worth asking the obvious :)
Best of luck with the new kit, troll

Nice easy router setup, even I couldn't get that wrong.
But it's still crawling. Speedtest.net showed 106Kbps Up, 54Kbps down, thinkbroadband.com showed almost identical speeds.
So if it's not the PC, not the modem/router, not the filter, not the configuration, what's next?
And why does nothing seem to be happening at BT as James said earlier? http://www.cosgan.de/images/more/bigs/g040.gif
What is your sync and SNR, currently?
What do your new router stats show?
eg Sync speeds , noise margins etc.

with a low sync speed it will take 3 days to correct your profile
post your IP profile using the link below, bear with it can be slow at peak times

his upload speed should still be higher than 106, as upload doesn't have a profile/cap.
trollslayer3 - have you looked in Max Reports lately? Is it reflecting your actual sync speeds/profile at the moment?
if no change after another day or so I'd say this needs to go to BT to check the line card in the DSLAM.

Thanks guys, it's great to have so much advice coming from other users as well as Admin. I appreciate it.
The problem has now been logged with BT (thanks James) as it's quite obviously a fault before it reaches my phone socket, not with my equipment or settings.
Now then, Sync speed, Noise margin, SNR? I'd post the details if I knew how to get it. Can anyone tell me what they mean and how I check for later use? Could be useful info I think and I'm keen to know these things (cuz it'd be embarrassing to find out my kids understood them and I didn't :D)
This might get you started :) http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/linestats.htm
Following on from tonys ................
go to this link and the instructions to get DMT tool working.
http://www.kitz.co.uk/tute/DMTv7.htm
Whilst at this stage you might not want to play about and "tweak" things it does have a nice clear interface and tell us all the info we need on here :). Its also good for resyncing the router in a nice friendly way.

Thanks for the info guys, that'll be useful.
The good news is that having had the BT engineer visit he found and fixed a problem at the exchange and told me my line will support 6Mbps (far better than the 3Mbps that Virgin told me was maximum. Still stabilising but seeing speeds on 5+ at various times. Better than I've had before.
Thanks for all the help and input.
My speedtouch 330 used to be stuck at around 2-3mbs until i found an optimiser for the 330. I installed it, ran the program, rebooted and instantly my download speed doubled.
I tried the latest drivers and everything else i could think of and the only thing that worked was this optimizer. It was bloody hard to find too. I still have it if you would like to see if it'll help your speed too?
