View Full Version : Maximum Speed Question

I rescently moved over to ADSL24 after BT somehow managed to ignore our request to upgrade our account to an infinite bandwidth profile TWICE. As well as me nagging due to the incredibly slow speeds we were getting with BT lately (250 kb/s maximum a majority of the time).

I used to be able to nearly completely max out the line maybe getting about 800 kb/s if I was using lots of connections etc. on the old BT line, now I've moved over to ADSL24 I was hoping to get this sort of speed quite often. Unfortunetly it's not been so perfect, although a LOT faster than BT in all respects :j

We are located about 720 metres away from the exchange as the crow flies according to the stats page, and as I speak I'm getting around 670 kb/s on a download, although maybe a week ago I was getting say 590 kb/s maximum.

So I'm asking what speeds should I be idealing getting with the following stats:

Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin 10.2 24.0 dB
Line Attenuation 23.3 16.0 dB
Errored Seconds 741 2
Loss of Signal 1 1
Loss of Frame 0 0
CRC Errors 816 0
Data Rate 8128 448 kbps

My SNR margin seems to bob around a bit from about 9.0 to 10.5, although I did see it bop down to around 6.5 a couple of times.

I'm currently using the Safecom/Origo router ASR-8400, it's got 4 ethernet sockets, a USB and no wireless, should I try using my BT Homehub that's been flashed with the original firmware (So it can be used on any ISP) to see if I get better speeds?
(Might take a bit of messing around with, and I don't really like the interface, it's awkward and doesn't have many settings)

Thanks for any help or comments :J

EDIT:
Just did a BT speed test to see what it said, here are the results:

IP profile for your line is - 7150 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 5359 kbps

I am getting faster than that downloading off a filehosting service, mind you I am making 15 connections to the servers (3 files at a time, 5 connections each), maybe that makes a difference? (:

EDIT:
I can't get my BT Homehub/Speedtouch 7 thing to connect to the internet.
I'm not sure if I'm using the right setup for things, I've put PPPoA and left the VCI.VPI values at default 8.35 (Might be wrong way around).

Anyone got any ideas? D:

VPI=0, VCI=38 for UK - the settings you have at the moment are for USA, I think.

Your IP profile is correct for your sync speed. The actual throughput you get will vary according to the time of day - you can check the status of the centrals at http://adsl24.co.uk/centralstatus.php. It's also worth checking whether there is a known contention issue at your exchange using http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges/. Finally, make sure that you're using a wired connection when carrying out any speed tests.

Trying a more powerful router (the Origo is on the very old Conexant chipset) may alos improve settings. Also, try changing the MTU to 1500 and optimising your PC network card/RWIN settings.

Thanks for the heads up on the VPI.VCI values, I had no idea where to get the proper values from Jaggies :J

How would one go about changing the MTU value, is it something that needs to be changed on the router or the PC?

I'll give the Speedtouch 7G a go then, now I have some working VPI.VCI values (:

Thanks for the help!

EDIT:
Great, for some unknown reason, with the Speedtouch 7G my PC is the only one that can see the internet.... Even if I connect my PC in the identical way to other PCs.

God knows why, I guess I'll leave it until the family doesn't need the internet, like some god awful time in the morning :J

Details of how to tweak your MTU and RWIN can be found at http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/tweak2.htm.
