Hi all,

I need your help. Keep getting random disconnections every hour or so and have done since activation.

My house is wired in CAT5E and the master has a ADSLNation XTE fitted from which the router Netgear DG834G connects to. The telephone extension connects to 2 and 5 on the XTE. So you can see everythings wired correctly [me<----electrician]. But this is driving me insane as my gaming keeps getting kicked off and the wife's VOIP [sipgate] disconnects mid call and I have to bear the brunt for apparently leaving reliable orange  .

Youll see from below where the confusion sets in as everything looks hunky dory.

If my router says its been connected for over a hundred hours and all pc's and sip telephones disconnect randomly what the hell is going on?

I look forward to any help you can throw my way.

Now I just know your going to throw the SNR at me but it varies between negative and 5dB. am I perhaps better going for a fixed 2mb connection or will putting interleaving back on help although Ill lose some latency?

Well the router times suggest your router hasnt been rebooted in nearly 60 days now.... so perhaps that would be somewhere to start?

I never owned a netgear that couldnt last more than a week without a reboot.

Did you have the netgear modem when you were with orange? You may be suffering the MTU issue when you auto switch centrals...... try setting the MTU to 1500.

Your SNR going so low certainly isn't ideal. Your target SNR probably needs to be higher than the default of 6 dB, although I'm not sure whether BT accepts requests for target SNR to be increased.

Yep, the SNR going under 6 will cause dropouts and bad latency.

Do BT accept requests for target SNR to be increased though?

No, not manually. The BT system should be applying this automatically. Rebooting the router around 5 times in succession would probably cause the BT system to raise the SNR though.

Thanks for the replies,

Ive upped the MTU to 1500 and reset/rebooted the router.

I see how things go from here and post back.

BTW, whats the difference [outside usage allowances]between the up to 2Mb home 30 and the home unlimited which shows a fixed speed. Is the Home 30 up to 2Mb adaptive and if so is it not possible to have a fixed 2 meg with the home 30 restrictions. I just want a reliable connection and this would do it i think by upping my SNR to a repectable level but the Home unlimited is prohibitively expensive for me.

You can have a 2 Mbps fixed speed plan with Home 30 if you want to.

Thanks tboorman,

How do I do that then?

Just create a ticket requesting this. IIRC, there's a fee of £5 + VAT.

Nope, there is no longer a fee from Home > Office or Fixed > Max and vice versa

Thanks James, Tboorman,

Ill create a ticket then and see if things improve, tonight for example i have disconnected at least 4-5 times and its only 9.07.

Some lines are generally more succeptable to disconnections, and different routers/filters can often "improve" the handling of these.

thanks James but from my original post I've got the best of gear and wiring, I think that ultimately its causing the problems as it can sync at high speeds because of the quality of my kit but wont/ cant sustain it.

I've raised a ticket anyway for the home 30 at a fixed 2Mb[hopefully not adaptive] so well see if things improve :)

No problems :)
