Hello everyone. Line was activated yesterday as indicated by Brian. I have eventually got my system working and even appear to have got all my email addresses up and running. Quite a feat for me!! My main problem seems to be speed with a speed test done saying that my download speed is 109 kbps (0.1Mbps) and upload is 380 kbps (0.4 Mbps). Does it usually start this low?
Hope this improves

Hi Ricardo, welcome to Adsl24. With the DSL Max products, there is a 10 day training period, during which your speeds can fluctuate greatly.

How far away from your local exchange are you?
And what sort of modem/router are you using????

Welcome to the family, Ricardo.

If you post your line stats (SNR & Attenuation) ppl may be able to give you an indication of what speeds you can expect once things settle down.

I am less than a mile from the exchange and using a Netgear DG834 which is wired into a socket in the bedroom. I would like to be able to let you have the stats but as yet haven't a clue how to get them. This is not helped by the fact that the user manual on disc will not display all the pages and the same happens if you try to view it online

Hi Ricardo
Your router has a web based user interface and you should be able to access it by clicking on this link ;
http://192.168.0.1/setup.cgi?next_file=stattbl.htm

I'm not familiar with Netgears, but your stats should show on the above link, look for SNR and Attenuation both will have up/down figures, post them here please ;)

The default details for entering that interface, if you've never been there before, are ...

username = admin
password = password

I strongly advise you change the password to a more secure one though :)

Below are some stats that I have found but no mention of snr
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 224 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 63 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin 3 db 9 db

I have already changed the password. Thanks for the help

Hi Ricardo,

Sorry to be the one to tell you this but those numbers are truly awful - Attenuation off the scale, an unsustainable Noise Margin, and the lowest downstream synch I have ever seen. You'd better start praying this is down to poor extension wiring/poor filtering/ring wire intereference.

First thing you have to do is locate the master socket. A modern one (NTE5) will have a split faceplate - plug the router into the test socket behind the lower, screw-off part of the faceplate and check the router stats from there.

Every socket with a phone/sky box/alarm/whatever needs a decent microfilter. You can improve things by detaching the ring wire in all the sockets also as this is unnecessary and may drag in interference to deteriorate the adsl signal.

So, time to move the comp and start testing. The figures quoted won't improve until something is done....I'm wondering if you're using any filters at all?

I am surprised you’re able to receive any adsl signals with them stats
With a threshold below 6 don’t expect anything above 0.5 Mbps
This might be helpful

Sorry for the delay in coming back, had visitors yesterday. These are my latest stats

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 352 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 63 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin 7 db 9 db

So things have changed a bit. I suspect it is probably the extension wiring that is probably the cause of the problem so I will have to wire the modem direct to the master socket and see what happens then.
Would using a surge protector have any adverse effect on the line?
In answer to your questions about filters. Yes they are on each of the 4 phones
Which is the threshold figure referred to by mirage?
Thanks for the help

The SNR (Noise Margin).

Ricardo

Thanks for that. It is all new to me so I am on a steep learning curve.

Have changed the wiring and the modem is now wired direct to the master socket and these are my line stats now

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8128 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 16 db 4.5 db
Noise Margin 14 db 30 db

Do these figures look OK now?

There is still some background noise on the phone. Any ideas how to tackle this?
Thanks
Ricardo

Have continued this post on the Broadband section now as it is probably more appropriate
