View Full Version : Reduced IP Profile

James,
In May 07 (I think when I joined) my sync speed was initially 6816. The fastest it's ever been appears to be 7392. Since October however this appears to have been in steady decline and as of 8th January it is along with my IP profile at an all time low of 5696 and 5000 respectively.
1. Why is this happening?
2. Can anything be done to improve the speeds?
Presumably the higher the numbers the faster the download speeds?
Thanks.
Pete

Have you tried carrying out the steps in http://adsl24.co.uk/faq/index.php?action=artikel&cat=5&id=48&artlang=en?

No, I fail to see how this would improve my situation. The wiring/micro filter setup has not changed at all since initial go live with adsl24. As such the problem must lie elsewhere.
I think you're missing an important point, pete. Things go wrong without anybody changing anything: filters fail, wiring develops faults, etc. Always best to make sure nothing has gone awry at your end first. ;)

If you've had a lot of resyncs within a short period of time, your target SNR may have been increased from the default of 6 dB, which will result in a reduction in sync speed. Can you post the line stats from your router please?

Yes, I suppose that's a fair point. As for line stats I'm not entriely sure the below is what you're after, I hope so
System Up Time 117:01:07
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
WAN PPPoA 1247184 1595568 0 815 2981 117:00:33
LAN 10M/100M 1560448 1261976 0 3019 880 117:01:03
WLAN 11M/54M 0 0 0 0 0 00:00:00
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 6112 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 32 db 10.5 db
Noise Margin 9 db 24 db
Looks like Tim was right - your target margin has been increased to 9 (at least). It's easiest to see the target margin right after rebooting the router, though. The target margin is increased in increments of 3 dB from the default 6 dB in response to line instability. This instability may be due to repeated drops & resyncs or BT's systems may decide the line is unstable if you repeatedly reboot the router within a short period of time. If the margin is increased you'll sync at a lower speed than previously and your IP profile will likely drop.
You've been synced almost 5 days (from my reading of the stats) so the fault, whatever it is, does not appear to be ongoing. I've seen here that an ISP can ask BT to reset the target margin to the default level in a situation like this but best wait for James to make a pronouncement on this.

It looks like your target SNR has probably been increased to 9 dB at some point. You could ask ADSL24 to try getting BT to change it back to the default of 6 dB.
But you should still plug the router in to the BT test socket first and re-post your line stats.

Ok, thanks for the help all. James, I'll do just that and come back once done.

Ok, plugged into test socket, reboot router and here you go
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
WAN PPPoA 37 49 0 131 892 00:00:34
LAN 10M/100M 479 380 0 3417 687 00:01:16
WLAN 11M/54M 0 0 0 0 0 00:00:00
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 6272 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 32 db 10.5 db
Noise Margin 8 db 24 db
Noticed the following as of today connected for near on three days from an extention socket and filter some 16M after master socket:-
SNR 8.7 to 9.1 Down Up 9
Line Atten 63.9 Down Up 31.5 No change.
Data Rate 1312k Down Up 448k
Modem rebooted and plugged direct in to the master as it enters house, no filter and 3M cable the following:-
SNR 8.4 to 9 Down Up 8 at the moment.
Line Attenuation same as above.
Data Rate same as above 1312k Down best has been 1800+

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: http://www.speedtester.bt.com/images/help.jpg -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 500 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 1312 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 297 kbps
Is this a stuck profile 9 and 11 Dec?
Any problems up to now therefore have been the BT supplied line, no difference.
Could be a stuck profile yes. I've logged with BT.

James, sorry, can you please clarify if you've logged my issue with BT or the poster below my last post?
Thanks

I think James has logged Jon's issue with BT. It's best if you open a ticket requesting that your target SNR is changed back to 6 dB.

Thanks, I'll do that.
***Done, ticket 6398 refers.

I note that a request has been sent to BT, I'm grateful to all those who've assisted me and replied in this thread. Good customer service. Thank you.
