View Full Version : Huge drop in download speed

I know you will of heard this so many times before so I'm going to apologise now before I go any further.
I joined ADSL24 on the 6th of December 2007, having moved from BT because of their insistence on throttling my connection but that's another story and I'm beginning to digress.
Since joining your happy band I have enjoyed download speeds of 6.5 meg on average which I consider perfectly acceptable considering I live in the middle of nowhere and some houses around here still use generators. 2 days ago I noticed a dramatic drop in my download speeds and I've not been able to achieve above 2.1 megs ever since but my upload speeds have remained consistent at around 75kkb a second. I consider myself a heavy user and since joining I have not turned my router off, also since joining I've run a speed tester relatively regularly to keep an eye on my speed and this has confirmed that my speeds have dropped since Friday of last week.
I know you're going to tell me that I must remove the faceplate of my main socket to plug my router in and so on and so on but let me stop you there because I cannot do any of this. I am wheelchair-bound and my homecare refuses to get involved for fear of electrical shock. Yes I know ridiculous but what can I do.
Any suggestions from anybody that doesn't involve physical exertion would be most helpful because I'm no longer receiving anything like the speeds I should be.
Have you tried rebooting the router a few times?

If you reboot it too many times BT will think your line has a problem and will lower your IP profile so be careful you dont "Reboot it" too many times in a small time frame
Rebooting it once wont effect it much just dont do it over and over like a few times in a row.

2 much as speeds in general over this weekend have been a lot lower than normal and theres no real need to run speed testers all the time either really
check in "my account" and see if the connection logs and IP profile have changed if they havnt then theres nothing to worry about and its "just one of those things"
also if you check out the news you will see that 2 underwater cables have been cut that deal with the internet and communications in general and this has put some strain on other lines that have had traffic re-routed onto them ..im sure this has had some effect on the internet in general

merlin99,
As of 07/01/2008 14:46, your current IP profile is 7150 Kbps.
Apparently my IP profile hasn't changed since the 7th of January so I guess there isn't very much wrong and it must be down to these other things that you highlighted.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who responded to my request for help. I really do appreciate you taking the time to help me.
Every few weeks my 7+mbs connection collapses , usually sometime during the night.
Right now I'm down to an IP of 1500 although I've connected at 7488.
This isn't a new thing. It used to happen with Pipex and although I'm convinced that the problem lies with BT ( their engineers checked the house last year ) , I thought I'd bite the bullet and dispatched my son to PC World to buy 3 new filters.
He's just come through the door having spent £42 :(
Last night I'd priced them on Amazon about £7 at most.
Anyway I'm patiently waiting for my IP to rise again to 6500 but why does it have to take so long???
At least with ADSL24's control panel I can see what's happening
ATB
Blame bt for their annoying system :(
It should take around 2 days for your profile to go up as its quite a large jump from 1500 to a 6500 profile. Take a look here (http://adsl24.co.uk/forum/showpost.php?p=19572&postcount=1) for more info on it.
Sorry to jump is here with my problem, but I didn't want to start another thread if there's a simple solution.
When I joined on 23/11/2007 my sync speed was 8128 & profile was 7150.
On 11/01/2008 it dropped to 5696/6000 for a couple of days and came back to 8128/7150 on the 13/01.
It stayed like this for another 6 days, then dropped to 7968/7000 on the 19/01 before coming back up again to 8128/7150 the same evening.
During the morning of 20/01, it changed to 7293/6500 then 4544/4000.
Looking at my connection logs, I see the connection was lost/reconnected 31 times on 19/01, then another 13 times, between 00:37 & 05:30 on 20/01.
My Max line report in the control panel shows:
As of 20/01/2008 02:42, your current IP profile is 4000 Kbps
The router shows it's synced at 8192.
Is there anything I can do?
Ta
PS.
Router shows SNR Margin at 12
After a reboot it did show 8.5 then after another one it was 13.5, and it's gone back to 12 now, without reboot.

It looks like a stuck profile. How long has the router been syncing ay 8128 for now? More than 3 days? I would suggest checking all your wiring/filters etc as something must be causing the problems you have seen.

TY for quick reply as always :)
I'm sure it's been syncing at 8192 for more than 3 days, I'm sure it was like that over the weekend.
The router is upstairs at the moment, with a cat 5 lead from the master socket. I'll move it back downstairs for a few days and see how it goes, maybe the cable has been squashed, damaged in some way.
Cheers

Could well be, but ensure that all sockets only have wires 2 and 5 connected, even if they are not used :)
There's only 1 phone point in the house, I'd made up a CAT5 connection using a back box and rj45 socket at each and plugged 1 rj11 from the filter into 1 end and another rj11 cable at the other end to the router's adsl connection. That's how it's been almost from the beginning.
It's moved now anyway, the router is connected via a filter to the master socket, with my pc now at the other end of the cat5 connection.
hope it helps :)
