Onto my 3rd day with on ADSLMAX. I know that I will be subjected to 10 days of testing but my download speed as I type is 98 Kbps. Since moving over I have seen speeds as low as 38 Kbps and as high (!) as 300 Kbps but generally around the 100 mark.

My upload speed looks fine at about 380 Kbps and My router stats are great. Shouldn't I be seeing an improvement in speed as the testing proceeds or do I really have to live with this for another 7 days? If so thats fine, I'll just sit and wait but some advice would be appreciated.

thanks

Neil

BTW I've just found this note from the truely appalling freedom2surf who I left to come here. Note that even an awful outfit like f2s will react to speeds consistently below 288kbps ;

"For the first ten days of your service BT will monitor the speed at which your modem is able to synchronise with your telephone exchange.

Please note we cannot accept or log a fault with BT regarding your service within this first 10 day period unless service is lost completely or speeds drop below 288kbps."

check your internal phone extentions you have a very bad noise margin
plug the router into the main master bt socket if you can

and check all your filters

I think when they say '288kbps' they mean when the modem is connected at that speed rather than the rate you are downloading at.

You seem to be connected at 5600 which seems pretty good.

My download speed is also all over the place and i think im supposed to have finished the 10 day period. In the evening (like tonight) gettin 70-80kbps but other times of day its around 200kbps. The weird thing is tho my modem says its connected at 8000kbps!?!

Aha, Mirage, thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Taking everything right back to the backplate of the master socket currently gives me 3Mbps.

Result :-)

Hi Alex,

I think you're confusing kilobits per second (Kbps) with kilobytes per second (KB/s) - 1000 Kbps = 125 KB/s.

tim,

I probably have, i usually do! ;)

All i know the "connection" speed and the download speed are different!

Your "connection speed" is the speed at which you synch with the exchange.

Your "download speed" is determined by several factors: IP profile (obtained from synch speed) & exchange and network congestion/contention - BT, ISP, and every other network you traverse to the download target.
