Your downstream attenuation suggests you're quite a way from the exchange and the downstream margin isn't terribly healthy either.

Use the BT Speed Tester (http://speedtester.bt.com/) to get a more useful result, including IP profile. Connect your router to the test socket behind the master socket, assuming you have one, as this cuts out any negative effects of extension wiring in the home. The BT tester tends to be oversubscribed, so keep trying.

Thanks, just tried the BT tester 4 times, from the page where phone number entered to the login page timed out three times.

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: http://speedtester.bt.com/images/help.jpg -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 1000 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 1248 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 932 kbps

I am at least 5.5km/6km from the exchange may be more. BT up to Sept 2004 said adsl not available but an engineer told me how to go about getting it in. Confirmed several times 1.5meg download possible over the last 18 months with BT, could have lived with that. Other onliners are quoting not less than 2meg now.

The online checkers will only ever give you a best guess. As Ircsum suggests, see whether you get better results using the test socket at the back of your master socket.

No test socket, just the BT wiring straight into the master.
Filters?
Eventually got to the BT site and got:-

Have seen a lot higher in the training period without drop outs, cant live with this, sorry.
Will try a couple of different things first.
Passed Entanet on way home tonight the large oriental building.

Jon - the profile, and thus your speed, is determined by the speed at which you synch with the exchange. This in turn is determined by the quality and length of your line, and the quality of your own kit - internal wiring, filters & router.

It doesn't matter which ISP you're with if you can't synch higher as this is strictly the connection between your router and the exchange - the ISP does not come into the equation. Swapping router & filters and connecting via the master may improve matters. As you don't have a test socket try connecting the router to the master without any filter or phone connected, and repeat the BT test.
