View Full Version : BT bandits!
My phone line must of been installed by Alexander Graham Bell it's so old.
I occasionally get line noise and had calls cut off, but mainly it works ok. I get low SNR stats in my router in the evenings and sometimes the connection will drop.
I've noticed that the ancient internal wiring from the little box above the front door that then runs to the wall socket is worn and the wiring exposed in places so I placed a fault with BT who said an engineer will come out but it MIGHT cost me £116!! but she said if the wiring is that old it may possibly be replaced for free.
Anyone here had a simular situation or is BT engineer? Do you reckon I'll have to cough up £116?

Hi Jolly
Had a similar problem, cost me £180....due to the fact that he went over the hour by 10min. The only consolation is the line quality is perfect. Recieved a refund of £40 due to the slight damage to the exterior brick.
If you have the work done ,you can request as many points in other rooms free of charge. Make sure he completes the work in the allotted hour or you will incur further charges.(£65 hour)

Its ok to do DIY....But if you do not have a standard BT NTE-5 master telephone socket, then you would have to find a supplier for the Bt equivalent.
Then we have the cat and mouse of blame if the telephone line is still crap. BT had me changing my router (Netgear replaced it free of charge)"still had the problem". The ISP did their check's...Came back to BT and the internal wiring and no NTE-5 master telephone socket.

I think it's best to let a professional do it, the wiring must be 40+ years old and the little box thing where the wiring enters the house on the inside has caveman drawings on it's that old! Hopefully it will be done for free.
