View Full Version : Upgrade Router firmware has lowered sync speed :-(

On Monday (3rd March) I upgraded my Vigor 2600g firmware to fix a stability problem. It took a while and there were several reboots which seemed to lower my IP profile from about 3000 to 1750. Since then the router has been up continually (previously it would usually reboot about once per 24 hours) but my IP profile is still 1750 and the sync speed is still reported by the router at 2240000.
I've seen a few posts saying 'just wait' or 'wait about 5 days and then report a stuck profile'. But I don't get it - if my router doesn't now reboot (without me forcing it to) then how will I suddenly get a faster sync speed? From what I've read here, people tend to say 'leave the router alone'.
Can anyone advise what the best thing to do is? It feels like I should try rebooting...

rebooting the router can sometimes look to the exchange as a line drop, and can raise your SNR, and then lower sync speed again....
SNR's take a lot longer to lower again, so you can get stuck on a lower profile for much longer...
the equiptment in the exchange will make the router resync when the profile goes up...

Thanks smarty!

no problem... also be aware, the smaller the change in profile, the longer it will take to rise....

My profile is still stuck at 1750 and snyc speed reported by my modem by around 2000. It's annoying as I think it only happened when I upgraded my router firmware in order to improve stability and get a faster connection!
But I think the problem might be that BT have reset my target SNR. It used to be about 8 and with the lower profile and sync speed it's now about 13 (see attached).
Is there anything I can do here? (my normal profile is about 3000 and sync about 3500)
<edit>
by the way, the big leap up in the graph towards the end is due to removing a couple of wires in my phone sockets - credit for that tip to smartybones if I remember rightly.

Is there any other versions of the firmware you could use?
If BT have increased your SNR because of the router re-syncing a lot then you will be stuck as no firmware can resolve this. You could use a router that lets you tweak your SNR but this is not a long term solution.

Oh great. So basically there's nothing I can do short of somehow getting hold a router temporarily with the extra SNR functionality?
I had about 9 router reboots over the course of 1 hour on 3rd March between 12.50 and 13.50. at 15.20 on that day my profile was dropped to 1750. So I guess the target SNR change is related to this.
So basically it would have been better to stick with the old firmware which rebooted the router every 24 hours but at least gave me a faster connection!
Thanks for the answer anyway.
Is there really nothing that can be done? Is there any chance it will 'sort it self out'? Anyone have any idea what the cheapest router that supports the SNR adjustment is?

I have a Netgear DG834PN and i have found some firmware that you can tweak your SNR , ive done it and it makes a difference. Went from sync at 3000 to over 5000 but its dropped again  b*****y BT im am sick of em...the exchange im on needs upgraded to handle the traffic but guess what BT will not do it as this costs money and we all know they dont like spending it on the consumer dont we !! thats prolly why the fat cats ride around in top of the range motors, expensive nights out....i cud go on...but anyway sorry for the rant.
This firmware also supports the DG834N,DG834GT wireless router aswell here is the link if you decide to get one, also for anyone else that is having problems.

I had a quick read of:
http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=general&Number=3288668&page=0&view=expanded&sb=5&o=0&fpart=all&vc=1
It seems to say that target SNR should drop by 3 automatically after 10 days or so given a stable connection. Have to wait and see I guess.
Don't really want to go buying a router that costs too many pounds. (cheapest buy it now DG834PN on ebay is £35 inc delivery) It's an annoyance rather than a real problem.

Well, call me impatient but I just ordered a refurbished Speedtouch 585 from DSL Depot. I'd like to give this DMT thing a go. I don't like the idea of BT messing with the TSNR and it would be nice to get a bit of control back.

Well, my ST 585v5 arrived this morning from DSL depot and after much fannying around trying to set up port forwarding (it just didn't work at all with the installed firmware), I got it to work with some updated firmware from the Dutch Speedtouch site.
The DMT thing seems to work. But. Oh. Ah... (And this is where I realise I didn't think this whole thing through) despite my sync speed being higher now, my profile is of course still on 1750! So no magical increase in speed and I think I prefer my old router... doh.
It will take a little while for the BT profile to catch up with your sync speed.

IP Profiles take a few days to update, aslong as you dont reboot the router in them days.
Yep, there is nothing you can do but wait for the profile to increase.
