View Full Version : Please try this test a.s.a.p.
Greetings folks
I migrated over from Tiscali / f2s and was activated on Wednesday with ADSL24.
Now, I can reach every website in the world ... EXCEPT for Tiscali. I still have some e-mail accounts with tiscaliand cannot access those either - I cannot download them to OE not can I get to the Tiscali webmail - because I can't get to the site.
This has only happened since I was activated here with ADSL24.
SO ... is it that somehow my ADSL24 IP has been blocked?
Or has ADSL24 blocked access to Tiscali ???
PLEASE TRY THIS TEST AND POST BACK
If you are connected to ADSL24, please try to load the Tiscali site :
www.tiscali.co.uk
Does it load for you without any problems?
I'd really appreciate it if ALL of you could give this a try and report back here.
Thank you very much.

opens fine for me....
Loaded instantly for me. Probably whats happened is that once you changed ISP, you were no longer able to access web mail etc because Tiscali only allow internal users access.

Ok for me.you should be able to access the page but do not know if you can login.
I was with Vispa and i can still login and accsess anything and i have been away from them for 6 months.
Might just be a Tiscala thing
Thanks for doing these tests guys - much appreciated.
E-mail downloading nothwithstanding, the fact that I can't even load the tiscali home page means that something is badly wrong!
I went to a site called Central Ops (http://centralops.net/co/) where you can enter a domain name (tiscali.co.uk) and run various tests. I ran a traceroute and something else - I think it was a ping test - both failed.
Yet, when I used the anonymouse.org anonymous surfing site - which masks your IP address and uses their own IP, I could load the tiscali homepage!
Obviously something is going on either with my ADSL24 static IP being blocked by Tisclai (but how did they find out what it was?) or somehow ADSL24 is not allowing this connection to go through.
Time to give James a PM.
Thanks again for giving me your results folks - at least I know now that problems are with my own IP.
Dr. Mac
Which DNS server are you using?
You could try OpenDNS and see if that makes a difference. 208.67.222.222 / 208.67.220.220
Oh and I might add that my Email at F2s became in-operable a few days after migration..
The DNS will only be an issue if trying http://212.74.99.30 does not work (that's the IP address of www.tiscali.co.uk, which your DNS server converts to the numeric string and then your browser loads the page).
I think it must be something to do with your IP address, but why I don't know. Perhaps as you've just joined ADSL24 you've been given a static IP from a pool, and the last owner did something bad and got the IP blacklisted by tiscali?
A PM to James or JamesL should get you sorted. Given that others on these boards can access the site via ADSL24, a quick change to your IP address might well sort the problem.
Just another thought, and this might be a total non-starter, but if you use a router, do you know what your MTU setting is? 1500 used to work well on F2S, but I read a thread here on the ADSL24 forum a few days back, where another ex-F2Ser said they had to use a different MTU to get a non-resolution issue solved. I think he said he switched from 1500 to 'auto'. Someone else chipped in that using 1478 worked well on ADSL24. Worth a try, but I'm sure James(L) will know what's really going on and have a solution.
Andrew
Greetings again folks.
Problem SOLVED!
I surfed to the ukfsn website and was reading their page about conection problems etc. They said that the main reason for not being able to get to certain webpages was ... the MTU setting!
I've never, ever heard that one before!
ADSL24 advise an MTU of 1400, which is what I set my router to. Anyway, after reading the ukfsn info, I changed it back to what I had always had it set to - 1500.
Bingo! Ticali page loads in a flash and all tiscali e-mails now download perfectly in both Mailwasher and OE.
So it looks as though Tiscali need a MTU of 1500 to reach!
Well, at least not 1400 - which is what ADSL24 said in their activation e-mail !!!
Thanks for your input Andrew ... it looks like your inofrmation is spot on. By the way, I did have my router first set to 1400 as advised by ADSL24, then set it to 1478 which is what I also read on these forums. Both worked with every other webpage in the world ... but not with Tiscali!
So there you go then folks. Another interesting thing I've learned about this oh! so wonderful world of ADSL and the Internet. :)
Best wishes,
Dr. Mac
Thanks for the information. The MTU is always an odd one. It depends on the router model. site you are visiting and what MTU is set on your network card too. Glad you found the issue.
No problem loading the Tiscali webpage here with an MTU set at 1478,
yorkie.
Hi Yorkie
Yes ... as James said in the post above, there seem to be many things that can affect this issue.
Things are now working fine for me with the adjustment to 1500 - so I'm going to stick to that! :)
Thanks for taking the time to do the "test" and report back here.
