View Full Version : News server
News server seems to be down again. No mention on ADSL24 status page again. Still got outstanding ticket from last outage. Not good enough ADSL24. Now looking at other ISPs.
Have I missed something ...... Do ADSL24 now have news server(s) ???? Text ??
Wow, I am out of synch with all the latest, but another freebie (or is my connection cost going up ? :(), can't be bad.
If it s an addon freebie, well from my previous experience they tend to get (rightly) a low maintenance priority and are rather flaky as a result. Still, if its free, who really cares. :D

Yes you have missed something but no it is not a freebie, you pay for it. Stop paying your account for a month and see if you still get it free.
It appears to be a regular thing Usenet not working. It doesn't seem to get mentioned on the service page.
I to like Vendee am looking for another ISP now, as it doesn't appear to be a one off and ADSL24/Enta don't seem to think it is a problem, which means that it will probably continue.
There are plenty of free text newsservers out there so whats the fuss about!
just google free text newsserver!

How many ISPs actually provide a news service these days anyway? Not many and the ones that do all seem to have regular problems with them. If usenet is that important to you buy a block of a few GBs from Astraweb or Usenet-News for a few dollars that will last years if all you are doing is text. Otherwise good luck finding a good ISP with a reliable news server for the same money you're paying Entanet.

Steve

The fuss is about paying for a service and not receiving it. Its not a difficult concept to grasp.

I'm sorry Steve but if you had problems with conectivity, you would complain about it. I'm having problems with the news server so I'm complaining about it. The news server is an advertised part of the package I signed up to.

Well yes I would complain about connectivity issues, that's the point of having an internet connection, it is no use if you can't connect.
However, text news servers. Are you saying you wouldn't have signed up if Entanet didn't provide a text news server? Where will you go to get one included in the price of the ISP sub? Will the ISP be any good? Will it cost you more? I can't help but think that if you're happy with the other aspects of the Entanet service that you're cutting off your nose to spite your face just because the news server goes down occasionally. Like I said, few ISPs these days offer any usenet access as part of the package. Be don't even provide email as standard!
Regards,
Steve
Like I said free text news group servers are available elsewhere without having to change ISP so its not going to cost anything extra or inconvience you.
To me it just sounds like you want something to complain about! I can see email servers being a big issue if email is not available, but you surely don't rely on a newsgroup message in the same way as an email do you?????????
Supermarkets have car parks that are free - doesn't guarantee you will get a space immediately though. Do you change supermarkets because on the odd occassion there are no spaces when you first arrive?

this entire conversations been done already in another thread and virtually word for word
LOL
as for if its free or part of your subscription the way i read it is its free based on the text on this page
http://www.adsl24.co.uk/broadband_office.php
which says
Newsgroup access Text-based - free of charge for all customers
i take that as they provide it free of charge to anyone with an account with them however this is only my opinion , as for leaving over it i doubt you will find another ISP that has free usenet access or that has the same level of customer satisfaction and feedback that ADSL24 has or at the same price for that matter
a "proper" usenet account can be got for at little as £1 or £2 a week and thats with a top class server/operator if access is that important to you then that kind of payment and outlay isnt that big a deal even to anyone with limited income .just means 1 less can at the weekend or chocolate bar

That's right. I wouldn't have signed up with ADSL24 if they didn't have a news server.

Do you really think that I sit here waiting for the news server to go down so that that I can complain about it here? I'd rather have a good service and not have to post here at all.
You refer to the free text based news servers. Unfortunately the free ones are not very good and of course as its is genuinely free, you can't complain when the server is down.
Which brings us neatly to the ADSL24/Enta server. That, I pay for. Please don't try and spout the line that its a free service out of the kindness of their heart. Its an advertised part of the package. You can't use the service unless you pay for the package. It-is-not-free! Your analogy with the supermarket carparks is fatally flawed because we don't pay a monthly subscription to them for contracted services.

Yes, the conversation has been done before. That was for another news server outage. I expect we will have it again when the next one happens.
And as I've said elsewhere, the news server is as free as is the email server and webspace. You don't get to use the news server unless you are a paying ADSL24 customer. It is NOT a free service.
It doesn't matter how much a Usenet account costs elsewhere. I'm already paying for one and I expect it to work.

THere are lots of ISP's who include access to a text new server in the service.
£1-2 week? for a text only service you are only talking 10 euro for a year with NIN quite possibly less if you go via one of the primarily binary services and by a time unlmited chunk of capacity.
However, I still think it's quite reasonable to complain that an advertised service isn't working as it should.

That's clear then. The news server isn't important to you but you obviously feel the need to have a go at anyone who complains about its lack of functionality.
Its an advertised service for which I'm paying for. If it doesn't work, I WILL complain whether you like it or not!
Now if you don't have anything constructive to add to the debate, or you are fed up with it all, nobody is forcing to to participate.
The news service is provided by Enta, as we are only technically 9 - 5 monday - friday (although we do lots outside of this time frame) best thing to do is contact the Enta adsl support line and inform them of the issues. They should be able to inform you of when it will be sorted. You can contact them on our 0161 number then press the button for ADSL support....

well i dont use it and never have and never will so i guess that means i can demand a refund
even though its down as a free service and a perk of being a enta customer
LOL
you need to lighten up and pay the £2 a week matey if its that important to you ;) eveyone knows free news servers are poor at the best of times

Just how dense are you? Its not a free service, I'm paying for it and I'l complain if its not working. I think you really need to STFU.

Point 1) The fact that the news service is provided by Enta is not mentioned on the ADSL24 home broadband features page. Perhaps this should be clarified.
Point 2) The use of the news server is an advertised feature which some customers will take into consideration when choosing ADSL24 as their ISP. As an ADSL24 customer, my point of contact is with ADSL24. If ADSL24 are touting the use of a news server as a benefit of being a customer then perhaps ADSL24 should be pressing Enta on behalf of their customers when the server is not working.
If you ruing our support team about any usenet outages - they will be able to advise. When you ring our 0161 support number, you will get through to either us or Enta - both of us can advise of any issues.
The news server does not touch our site at all and is run exculsively by Enta - but we list it on the website as it is a service Entanet provide to all resellers, not just us.
In reality, Entanet should be posting any usenet issues on http://noc.enta.net

Thats not very nice is it?
Just because someone has a different viewpoint to you doesn't mean they are dense.
I view all "the extras" as free..... I pay my monthly sum for internet connectivity pure and simple., the extras are "free" in my mind. Am I dense also?
They are not "extras", they are part of the package. They are not free - you are paying for them. The fact that you don't use them doesn't make them free.
There would be one hell of a row if the email or the webspace was continually failing.
I must be dense myself because I don't see why newsgroup access is thought of differently. Please elucidate.
I have a right to disagree - and i do :D
I, like others I suspect chose ADSL24/Entanet on the basis of the price and quality of support , to provide a connection to the internet - not on what I class as non-essential extras.... Email is free through other large sources (gmail/yahoo/hotmail) and so are newsgroups and their infrastructure and (finances) are far bigger and are non ISp dependant.
Therefore ISP email, newsgroups and other things are a bonus in my eyes.
Anyone who has used the internet for years will know not to use ISP email addresses for example as its a complete pain when you move ISP.
You are telling us what you and some others do - no grumbles with that. :)
You are not explaining why it is wrong for the other others to complain if parts of the package they pay for are unreliable.

ok seeing as im dense and you have resorted to foul language on a open public board that children have access to and read please explain to me this
on the page with accounts its got
Text-based - free of charge for all customers
doesnt that mean its NOT paid for as part of your contract and that they provide it as a free item or service for those who sign up with them ??
does it also mean that they could if they wanted impose a charge on access to it seeing as its down as free access even though you claim were already paying for it
if were all paying for it as part of our contract wouldnt it say just say access to newsgroups provided as part of your contract along with the amounts you can downlaod and the upload and download speeds etc cos if its charged for they havnt any right to say its free access have they ?
as i say im dense so i may just be misunderstanding it all

It's no big deal, don't beat yourself up about it. There are much worse things you could be than a bit dense ;).

I see it like this. The monthly price would remain the same regardless of whether ADSL24 offer it or not, as it is a FREE service.
