View Full Version : IP profile changes
If a line syncs at a lower rate than the IP profile, that profile willl drop.
I remember reading some time ago in this forum that BT had reduced the length of time a line had to be stable at a higher speed before the IP profile would increase again.
Somewhere in the FAQ (I can't remember where I saw it) it mentions that the line has to be stable for 5 days. Have BT changed the system, reverting back to the old timings ?

Not AFAIK. But with out link to where you read it it's hard to comment on that.
What they did was change the system so that bigger changes would be reflected quicker in the IP profile and smaller changes take longer - so anything between a few hours and 5 days.
See the page on Kitz's site (http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/IPprofile.htm)
The thing is if it can drop the profile in 40 minutes, why can't it increase it in the same timescale.
I have had 2 drops with my ip profile dropping from 3500 to 135 or 350 within an hour of losing connection. It takes almost exactly 4 days to get back to a good ip profile. Even after leaving my modem/pc switched on at sync rate of between 3500 to 4200 ...So annoying!.
Reading about the process involved at the exchange, it should be quicker to return the ip profile upwards, BUT it depends on how busy they are! (Busy decreasing ip profiles I guess!)
It makes you wonder whether it is a ruse by BT to reduce the demand on line capacity. If everyone is on a high profile, nothing like some drops for a few days to reduce the data transmitted. Or am I just a cynical old **** :)

That's exactly the reason IMHO. It is well documented that parts of BT's ATM backhaul are fully saturated, so by making the BRAS profile system slower to respond to higher syncs will reduce the load on it.
WBC and 21cn will have massively expanded capacity to run on, the profiles look like they will be changed almost instantly after a higher sync.
In my experience, it now only takes a day for the profile to catch up. I have not seen it take longer than this for ages. Maybe I am just lucky.
Must admit that I have been noticing some wierd things lately. Since 1st April IP profile on max reports only changes at about 5.30 am. Profile of 2500 came home from work at 19.00, external REIN caused a line sync of 256kbps at 16.30..in theory profile should have dropped to 135 but was still at 2500...resynched router to 3136 3 hours after line drop, the next day at 5.30 am profile droppped to 1500...bares no relation to sync so looks like BT playing silly buggers with the system again. It appears that the system is picking a midway point between profile and sync for one off events as oposed to the full drop which would result in threshold breaches?? Maybe I am wrong but after 4 months of a red VP (became green in March) I am very sceptical of anything that now happens,

Lol - my exchange has been red for over a year now.
Looks like my profile has gone back up to 4000 :)
Mines going down not up,
06:50 10/04/08 synched line at 3520 kbps.....23:32 10/04/08 router loses sync and re-syncs at 2900 ish (cant remember exact as in work), profile should be looking to go up from 1500 but instead at 05:12 on 11/04/08 drops to 1250kbps????? It's almost as if it is working a couple of days behind and is responding to events that had been and gone?
