View Full Version : profile up and down what should i connect at?
been with adsl24 for about two weeks after leaving tiscali. on the first day i synchronised at 7968, this then dropped to 3424 after 3 days then to 2848 after another 2 days. i then switched off the router and re synchronised at 7392 and today its dropped to 2848. on tiscali i averaged around 2.1 mbits so i am not expecting 7 mbit speeds but from my router stats what should i expect?
stats are-
Modulation: G.992.1 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 3,360
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/MB]: 1.18 / 11.99
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 18.5
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 23.0 / 41.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 19.0 / 18.0
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / TSTC
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 10 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 6 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 3,423,944
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 160
HEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 126
Sounds as if you've got a noisy line and it's bumping up the SNR to compensate which of course reduces your speed. Has it finished the training period.
not sure i am on a retraining period as i have migrated from a max service on tiscali. is there a way to find out?

Your noise margin is 18 whereas ideally it should be somewhere around 6 - 9 so your sync speed is being dropped accordingly. Usual advice about trying the router in the test socket, check filters, try different modem or router applies. With attenuation of 41 you should be able to get quite a bit more than 3 meg.

the router is already connected to the bt main socket via a long adsl lead and the face plate has a built in filter for the phones. i am about 2 miles from the exchange in a semi rural location and have noticed that depending on the weather the snr goes up and down a little. still synchronised at 2848, will wait for the lines to dry out after the rain and re-sync the router.

That isn't going to help, is there any way you can move the router closer to the socket? If your computer is hard wired to the router it would probably be better to have a long ethernet cable and short cable from phone socket to the router rather than the setup you have now.

ok just connected up the router on a short adsl lead to the bt socket. stats are now-
Uptime: 0 days, 0:02:29
Modulation: G.992.1 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 8,096
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [KB/KB]: 21.00 / 28.00
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 19.5
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 23.0 / 41.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 19.0 / 9.5
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / TSTC
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 111
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 1
HEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 1
i am assuming that now the snr margin is lower i will get a more stable connection? will leave it set as it is overnight and see if i maintain a higher speed.

Wow, your sync has gone from 3360 to 8096 and the SNR from 18 to 9.5.
Give it a day or two for your IP profile to catch up if it stays that way and you'll be flying :D

Steve
