It is a good six years since I last built a computer and things have changed - will everything I have below work with the motherboard etc. alright and will I need to buy any cables or will the mother board have everything I need?

GRRR! I have noticed the psu has no SATA leads. It does not tell you this in the description of course.

Odd that it hasn't got SATA leads, can always get adapters from the 4 pin molex to SATA sometimes get them in with the gear you've ordered anyways, so fingers crossed!

Just to confirm, am sure it is, but the CPU is an AM2 yeah? just since it only mentions 939 (4000+ suggests is def AM2).

And yeah, that looks like should all go together fine :)

AMD definately made a socket 939 4000+, best check this, otherwise may need a hammer to get it in an AM2 motherboard.

Not an expert on AMD processors - always used Intel myself - but the AMD website lists Socket 939 and Socket AM2 as two seperate product lines. Best get the BIG hammer ready - or choose a different cpu.

Yeah,

I wasn't sure about the motherboard - even though it says this, "AMD® Athlon 64 X2, Athlon 64 and Sempron in the Socket AM2 package!" which made me presume it would fit the CPU I have chosen.

I think I will go for this mother board instead

MSI K9N Neo-F V3 Socket AM2 nForce560 7.1channel audio ATX Motherboard

and this chip

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ Socket AM2 2.3GHz Energy Efficient Socket AM2 L2 1MB

<30 is pretty cheap for a case + PSU, which suggests the PSU is a fairly cheap unit, I tedn to think that cheap PSU's a are false economy. I'd look either for case with a better PSU or a separate case and PSU

All my PSU's were under £30, and all get 24 hour usage, just depends on whether you get a bargain at the time ;)

700W continuous I think are my best ones :)

Better to try getting something higher than 500W though, it'll work, but might generate more heat than you want inside the case... which means more noise, which means I get a headache, lol

You might want to consider changing the Samsung HD501LJ for the newer HD502IJ. The 501LJ is the T166 which is getting a bit old now but the 502IJ is in the F1 range (one less platter so according to reviews is quieter and has slightly better performance)...just ordered one from scan (don't think ebuyer stock it, oops) and will be ordering another next month when putting together my RAID unit.
