View Full Version : Are you worth migrating to from Z@n?

Currently on their 2mb package I can honestly say I have never experienced any issues at all regarding speed, connection or anything else, the reason I am looking is value for money which I feel Z@n is not any more. I would probably go for the Max Office 90 as the upload speeds appeal to me and the greater freedom on the gig useage.
Now I am reasonably confident (see router stats below) my line will take the max 8meg speed, but I dont want to migrate over and find that 2meg reigns the majority of time in the evenings and weekends, also are the upload speeds consistent?
Can I migrate with confidence and expect more than 2meg at peak times?

Exchange code: - EAGRY

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2272 kbps 288 kbps
Line Attenuation 15.0 db 7.5 db
Noise Margin 30.3 db 26.0 db

Hi there.

Your stats are very good so you should connect to the exchange at the full 8128 *8meg). Bt's system however will not let anyone get higher than 7.15meg due to the way their profile system works.

But you 'should' be seeing good speeds on non-busy periods and 2meg+ at busy periods. Uploads speeds for everyone area pretty much always top notch.

General contention at the exchange can have an effect too, so no ISP would be able to "guarantee" a "minimal" speed at peak times :)

Thanks

James

Thank you for your reply.
I have also been monitoring your Entanet status over the past week at various times and looks promising.
I have requested my MAC code and hope to come over shortly, a couple more questions though.
Online gaming, are pings good? (son is panicking as z@n has always been right up there)
How many of my domain names can I host on my webspace (if any)
Thank you

Officially one, although James may be flexible on this (within reason).

We will allow up to 5 domains to be hosted on top of (pointed to) your free webspace, but not 5 seperate websites entirely as this would require an additional charge as it's not normal practise for an ADSL connection service (in fact, most ISPs won't even let you host any domain on their free webspace - if they offer any!)

Thanks

Ok, all signed up office 90, mac code sent, treat me kind ;)
Just a quick question, I am on the old (now defunct) Zen 2meg package, is that speed controlled by zen, i.e when I switch to you will the line automatically go as fast as it can or does a switch have to be flicked at the exchange?

You've signed up for the Office 90 so it'll be as fast as your line can handle up to 8Mbps

Bear in mind, the first time you connect to us (day of migration), there is an initial 10 day "training period". During these 10 days, you should leave your router on and try not to reboot it unless absolutely required.

After the 10 days, BT's system will set your profile to the maximum your line can handle and all should be well :)

Apologies for "hijacking" this thread - I'm also coming across from zen, but am currently on the "zen 8000 active" service (ie. ADSLmax) - will my connection also be retrained from the cutover date, or does the training only apply to a migration from a different service to the ADSLmax service ? Thanks in advance.

As james said....."the first time you connect to us (day of migration), there is an initial 10 day training period."
Doe's not matter which package you have...."its a bt thing"

Warm welcome to the forum:D

Many thanks for the swift reply :) I was hoping there would be another retraining period.

Am looking forward to adsl24 ... I've got my email address working now and am busily moving everything across in readiness. I can't seem to access newsgroups yet though via news.enta.net - I'll try again when the activation date comes along.

As you aren't currently using an Enta connection then you won't be allowed access to the News servers. This should work once you're activated.

Just a small concern, all switched over today fine thank you
Router shows a downstream of 8096 and upstream of 832kbps, but downloads are running at 2mb
The only reason why I ask this is my line was on the old 2mb Zen package, are you CERTAIN this was not capped at the exchange and via Zen and I am just going through the training process
Should I reset the router or anything?, all I did was change the login and password
Forgive me but its my first migration!

Hey there iam, I'm jealous (waiting to get my mac code so I can switch). From what I've seen there's an initial 10 days when BT mucks around with your line (the training period as it were.) stay online and connected (especially if you're syncing at 8Mb!), your speed will vary a bit for these 10days, but by the end your profile/line should be updated. Unfortunately BT won't listen to any speed problems during the training period anyways, so there's nothing that can be done for 10 days from the date of transfer.

Hope that puts your mind at ease, from all the posts by 2Mb people moving to max this is terribly common, and shouldn't worry you.

The 2mb speed is due to your BT profile, not us capping you or anything. This will sort itself out in the initial 10 day training period and of course if it doesn't, contact us :)

Modulation: G.992.5 Annex M US 56

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 2,361 kbps / 15,108 kbps
