Hi everyone sorry to bring this up but my speed has dropped for a week, previous it was good then there was an external fault cable gone down and quite a few phones gone bad sounded like crisp bags being squeezes bt fixed fault after a few days came round done a test all ok as far as sound but speed gone from 34560 to about 2100 see bt test
IP profile for your line is - 2500 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 2944 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 2169 kbps
If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.
If you are experiencing problems with specific applications, servers or websites please contact your ISP for assistance.
Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.
is this the norm or what? bt man tested my gear all ok so it is definatly not my line or my filter etc any ideas? is it a case of a lot more people doing p2p and not enough pipes, any suggestions from anyone thanks

Your throughput is spot on for your IP profile, and your IP profile is correct for your sync speed. I guess the question is why your sync speed has dropped so to answer that please post details of attenuation and noise margin from your router. Also, try plugging your router into the test socket behind your master socket faceplate and see if the sync speed changes significantly.

Steve

That doesn't really tell us much I'm afraid, other than that your line has had a bit of instability. The key things we need are attenuation, sync rate and noise margin from your router. Have a look at Kitz (http://kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.htm) if you're not sure how to get these numbers.

No, that still isn't what we're after: attenuation and noise margin are what we need.

Hi
just had email to comfirm my purchase of a thompson speedtouch from DSL warehouse, it should be here in a few days,
ordered it last week but bank hol on mon ( well it did rain so it must have been a bank hol lol) and it comes with new filters leads etc etc .
I will let you know if my cut off stops and speed improves when I replace my second hand bt 210 with the new thompson, the bt 210 router was second hand from ebay when I originally got it anyway, and it is now randomly shuting off, and i have to switch ithe router of also my pc, then switch it all on again for it to work
You got a Thomson ST-546 v6 rather than a ST-585 v7?
Hopefully will be supplied with some reasonable filters at any rate .. if not a trip to adslnation might be in order :)

Have you tried connecting your router to the test socket at the back of the master socket using a new filter?
capnnormski
28/05/2008, 19:44
as i said when the cable was damaged a few weeks ago and telephones were down for days my gear was checked by bt man all were ok, last message on my ticket was that the fault was passed to bt so now it is a matter of waiting for them, how long is anyone guess

It's still worth trying to see whether it improves your sync speed.
There looks as though there is a lot of margin in your SNR
tboorman
29/05/2008, 10:20
It looks like your target SNR margin has been changed from the default of 6 dB to 15 dB at some point.

Notes:
Your line is configured to the maximum rate that it can support or at your chosen fixed rate, this is known as the line rate and would be viewed through your CPE software or in your router configuration.
Your IP profile is always less than the line rate and is normal on any network.
The Actual IP throughput is the average rate that was achieved during this test.

Your target SNR margin can be 6, 9, 12 or 15 dB. By default it's 6 dB, but if your line is unstable, BT's DLM will increase this in 3 dB increments. A higher target SNR margin will result in a lower sync speed.

Ahhh that is a bit more understandable, I had a reply to my ticket and they said it would cost to have an engeneer attend? I dont know if they meant to me or here? and they said I would go on a " awaiting appointment"? what ever that means, I asked how this can be sorted, mind you I did thank them for keeping me informed, they have been good that way cant fault them so far, I seem a bit dense, but
1 I dont know why it has gone like this and more importantly
2 how it can be repaired and also how this can be prevented
any ideas?
and thankyou very much for that info on the snr 3,6,9, etc that does make it a lot clearer to me and I know what to look for really good of you thanks
ohh one item where can I find out what my
Line Attenuation and snr etc should be please
once again thanks for any info
Thats what BT are saying, they have had a look and cant find a fault on the circuit. Its more than likely that the SNR has increased, forcing your sync rate down due to disconnections.

Capnormski, there are no values as to what your line att'n and SNR should be as they are both a product of the length and quality of your physical connection from your exchange to your house i.e. they will be different for everybody.
you get what you get I'm afraid. You will see from other posts like this one: http://adsl24.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=5676 that people get wildly different results.
