Hello,

This morning while updating & web browsing I noticed it seemed to take some time, checking my router (a Netgear DG834v4) my DownStream Connection Speed is 448kps.

That seems quite low to me?

I’ve been with ADSL24 10 days and this sudden drop is a little daunting, I’m willing to wait and see but with a full day of updating a newly formatted PC I’d rather ask… any idea what is wrong here? - I’m usually seeing 5000 to 6000 in the Downstream bit and downloading faster.

That sounds more like the upstream to me to be honest.
Can you post a screenshot of your full line stats for us and a bt speedtester (speedtester.bt.com) to take a goose at...

I'm not sure about 'line stats' but this is my router thing...

Please keep in mind I'm not too technical, so you'll have to bare with me and spell things out.

I have tried a BT speed test but it keeps giving me a 'The login name entered on this tool doesnt match that discovered by querying the network for your domain name'

It did work 2 days ago however, although I can't remember the exact figures. I don't suppose that would be much help?

That. Is proper odd.
Can you try in the test socket with another filter and a router stolen from a neighbour or someone?
(test socket FAQ here... (http://adsl24.co.uk/faq/index.php?action=artikel&cat=5&id=48&artlang=en)

It is odd, isn't it... and guess what? - my downstream connection speed is now 5856kbps. So it's back to its old self but I'll keep an eye on it.

re the test socket, must all masters look like the illustrated socket in the guide or is it going to be a case of opening up all my sockets and finding out? - just for future reference

The main one in the house, you may have to open one and follow the wires back and see if there is a common socket they all terminate in...

Sigh, something's still wrong despite my router now showing a download stream of nearly 6000kbps, I'm only managing to download at 30KB/s

I honestly cannot find a test socket either, there's only two candidates for being a master socket and neither resemble anything I see on the guide.

Hmm, BT speedtest with your adsl login, (username@adsllogin.co.uk)? And run it in IE just as the speedtest is a pain in the backside!

Heh, yeah, so I'm discovering..

To clarify, trying with ie, my telephone number and the old username@adsllogin.co.uk, with my username, obviously.... still no luck, same old error. I'll keep trying.

The reason your speeds are still low is because it takes 3 days for your BT IP profile to rise even after your downstream router rate increases. So your IP profile will still be around 350k on BT's system, and will rise on it's own to nearer your downstream rate :)

Ah, okay. Well, I managed to do a speedtest after 3 days of trying:

IP profile for your line is - 3500 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 5056 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 2614 kbps

Download speeds are back to what I'm used to, just seemed like a very strange blip to fall that low.
