View Full Version : DNS problem?

Hi there.

My migration to ADSL24 was completed today, but I seem to be having a few issues.

From speaking to a friend he thinks that my router may still be trying to use my old pipex DNS details. I've tried re-booting it a couple of times, but it still intermittently comes back with 'server not found' when trying to load up sites. It isn't happening all the time, but it's very annoying. Will this problem rectify itself over time, or will I have to manually type in a specific DNS?

I'm not the best when it comes to stuff like this, so I hope I have explained it okay.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Brown Trout and welcome here ;)
You're line is now undergoing a 10 day training period, so I must stress that you DO NOT keep re-booting your router.
Can you find out the current DNS addresses from your router. They should have changed automatically, but its worth checking. Also find out what MTU setting you have.

Thanks for the quick response

This is what it says on my router status

DNS 1: 195.74.113.58
DNS 2: 195.74.113.62

The model is Linksys WAG354G if that means anything. I can't find my MTU setting as yet.

Those DNS addresses are OK
Not familiar with the WAG354G but keep looking for that MTU. Look for WAN settings or PPPoA interface

Remember that for the next 10 days your connection speed will be all over the place, so its too early to do anything rash just yet. Just leave the router powered 24/7 up until your line settles down.

I've had similar problems - again I was activated today. My router is a Linksys WAG54GS and I have the same DNS IP addresses. MTU is set manually to 1478.

DNS resolution is erratic - some sites are OK but others (e.g. mainstream ones like Microsoft) time out. This also happens via a ping from the command line.

Any ideas?

Just found it:

MTU is set to 'manual': size 1400.

Do I need to change anything there?

Hi Brown Trout and TomU

Change your MTU settings to 1492 and try that. This will entail re-booting your routers  sorry

Hi Robbie - tried that but still no real joy... Some sites work, others don't (either from the browser or by pinging the web address).

With my previous provider (the late unlamented Biscit / V21) I had MTU set to auto (max 1500) - might this work? The ADSL24 FAQ says to use 1478.

Could the DNS routing tables be screwed up in some way?

Thanks for your help.

I have seen this problem on quite a few occasions lately. I never usually suggest this but in the past people have rebooted their router to factory defaults and everything was solved. Just a heads up :)

MTU ideally should be 1478 - but anything above 1400 and below 1500 should work fine. I think there is a sligh issue on the network as regards to this as there have been quite a few reports. It have been reported and the network team are looking into it.

There's a danger that ppl may be getting mixed up between the MTU setting for the router & the MTU setting for Windows.

Router: 1500

Windows: 1478

Check out this site (http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/tweak2.htm)for some hints & tips.

Thanks IRCsum - will try this. It may well be that the PC MTU is set higher than that in the router. So just to confirm, I should set the router MTU to 1500, and as in the instructions on the site you mentioned, try the ping test to find the highest MTU for the PC (network adapter).

The site also mentions setting RWIN - do I need to do this or does WinXP calculate automatically?

Many thanks.

Yes to the MTU question.

Try here (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/tweaks/5._RWIN) for a word on RWIN.
