Hi guys,
My ADSL24 connection goes live today (yay!). Only probem is, I've got a nice shiny new desk (a big one, instead of a small "tower" type) and have consequently moved my PC to my bedroom as there's no room for such a desk downstairs.
Until yesterday, my network looked like this:
Internet --- BT Voyager 2091 wireless router ---
---My PC (Ethernet)
---Kids PC (wireless)
---Laptop (wireless)
The BT socket (the only one we have) is in the living room downstairs. I had been running a 50ft ethernet cable into the next room to keep my PC on ethernet. Now my PC's upstairs I really don't want to have it wireless. Even with BT's own USB adapter (1055) and Turbo G enabled, speed seems to suffer quite a bit.
I have spoken to BT who offered to relocate the master socket for £165 (*choke!*), which I declined. A local BT engineer who advertises in the local rag has offered to survey the house, and either relocate the master socket or add an upstairs extension which he assures me won't make my sync, speeds or stability suffer.
He is a 35 years time served BT engineer and seemed to know all the right answers about adsl max, sync, SNR, attenuation etc (so I don't think he's BSing me). I just wanted to (finally) get to the point of this thread and ask:
In light of the above... Will my ADSL24 connection be affected? It goes live TODAY, which puts me on day 1 of the training period again. I noticed the advice on the ADSL24 site says unplug extensions for the training period - so presumably ADDING one is a real bad idea???
The BT guy is booked to come tomorrow (doh) as he couldn't come earlier. He only wants £30 to carry out all the work (survey, relocate or extension as decided on the day) so not too bad but as it coincides with day 2 of the training period....?
I'm only 450 metres from the exchange, and on my old ISPs have always, always synced at top profile and have good stats (not on my own PC at the moment but I can tell you that attenuation is low and SNR is high).
So, sorry for the long ramble but I really need to know what to do for the best. Do I have to put off the engineer for ten days? Is it best to relocate the master socket, or just get an extension?
Lee :D
