Well, im a counter strike source player, i just went to install steam, it installed fine, then when it went to update, it only gets to 99% and then wont go any further... this must be something to do with the connection, but i cant think what?

any ideas? cheers

edit: further investigation.. its definately the connection stopping it, i couldnt install on laptop either. Could be something to do with my packet loss?

also another thing, i play call of duty 2, but i keep getting kicked for loss of key packets, which means there is packet loss on my connection?

I have the same issue - Steam update hangs at 99%. I have the right ports open on my router, and looking on the Steam website, it says it may be a firewall issue, and that my firewall (Windows) needs to re-learn permissions for steaminstall.exe, steam.exe, hl.exe, hl2.exe and steamtemp.exe. However, I only have steam.exe and hl2.exe on my PC - is the update attempting to dowload the install executables and they're getting blocked?

Hope it works =]

(save straight into program files)

Obviously this is a temp. measure until ADSL24 sort out the problem =]

PS, James i still need help with my packet loss problem :P

Cheers

Can you post the results of your packet loss diagnosis again?

Looking at your screenshot in first few posts, there is very very little loss, in fact its pretty normal. Every line has CRC and Errors...

Thanks

I couldn't get the Steam update to finish either but it's worked fine tonight so I don't know what the problem was.

Hi James.

The problem is, im being kicked for packet loss on call of duty 2, by punkbuster - which didnt happen on tiscali? (if the port wasnt blocked LOL). That screenshot was only after 2 minutes of browsing, after a few hours its up in the hundred or thousands. When i download RAR files, some of them are corrupt, sometimes even on the 2nd or 3rd try too

also, i dont actually have a diagnosis program, its just on the modem toolbox thing. cheers

It could still be an MTU setting. Have you tried changing this to 1400 or tried a different PC / router just to rule that out? I've had that be the case for some customers in the past...

I used to find with the steam updates that if you removed the blob file this would normally sort out the problem when it re-downloaded it, not sure this is your problem in this case but it may be worth a try.... besides, i think its steam telling you to play decent games and not CS:S :P

I play Battlefield 2 and I have been getting kicked a lot for key packet loss as well, I think it is a punkbuster problem because ping has been fine and no noticeable loss at all
This has only started recently so maybe pb updated to a new version which has a bug
If u come up with a better solution let me no, it can be so annoying!

Firstly thanks for your swift replys =]

I could play fine on tiscali the day before i swapped over to adsl24, and yes ive tried it on my laptop also. How would i change my MTU settings? i know my way around my modem software quite well but cant see anything about MTU?
