View Full Version : XP Update problem
I installed a couple of updates for XP I saw were available last night - KB951748 & KB951978. This needed a reboot & I then found my internet connectivity was borked. Although I could ping a site I couldn't use HTTP, NNTP or FTP.
Uninstalled KB951978 first, no improvement, then uninstalled KB951748 which required a reboot & found that internet connectivity was back to normal. I'd be interested to know if this has affected others or if it's peculiar to my system.
Ircsum.
nm - found the cause - KB951748 & ZoneAlarm firewall. One workaround is to set the Internet Security level to 'Medium'. I'll do without the update until ZA beings out a fix.

So is this something that only happens to a few users with ZA or is it defo going to break everything?
Edit: Found this
We have been working with MS over night on the issue. We are very confident a fix will be released soon. As far as how that is distributed either a patch from MS or in the form of a new build from ZA has not been determined.
We will notify all users of a fix when its ready at the top of the forum in the main announcements section.
We also still stand by our current workaround that you should uninstall the MS update KB951748
And do not set your ZA internet security level to Medium. By setting to Medium you potential expose your computers to a huge number of other threats than just the one that this patch from MS fixes.

The best thing to do is to add the DNS servers you use to the trusted zone - see http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/pressReleases/2008/LossOfInternetAccessIssue.html. Some versions of ZoneAlarm do this automatically when you install it.
I just spent most of this morning sorting this out before I cottoned on to the Windows update problem. Having already installed Comodo firewall Free on my laptoop (and no problems encountered) I've finally ditched ZA on my pc in favour of Comodo.
Just wait for more problems... XP SP3 going out on automatic update today!

SP3 and the ZA issue goes to show why you shouldnt have automatic updates turned on. I have them off, and thus i decide when to install updates 9and after ive read forums to make sure they dont break things)
