Well im still connected at 128kbs and i have had 2 engineers out and none of them have done a thing. im convinced my telephone line is bust but when bt do the remote test they seem to think the line is running at full strength.
I cant make any outgoing calls but can receive calls.

these are the router stats. Why the router thinks im connected at 4mb i dont know. cos im actually only receiving 128kbs. Take a look at these stats. Isnt the noise margin huge? compared to other peoples stats i have seen.

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4256 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 42.0 db 27.5 db
Noise Margin 19.4 db 25.0 db

help?

That's odd. As you say your router is connected (at the moment) at 4256 but your speed is very low - sounds like either a stuck profile or line issue. If you can't make calls then you should contact BT on 0800 800 151 from a phone that can as that's likely to be linked with a line fault.

Can you run the BT speedtest @ http://speedtester.bt.com and let us know the result?

James

I have had 2 engineers out here. And both of them seem to think that there is nothing wrong with the line when there clearly is. and my results formt he BT speedtester is 138kbs. Like i say this whole thing has been going on for 2 weeks now.

Really is a complete joke!

hi, i have almost the same problem as you :( i have times when my phoneline goes dead and cant make to receive calls. i cant afford the engineer callout since im sure they will say theres nothing wrong and then im out of pocket £188. im just gonna have to get a new line installed and see how that goes

James will need to see the full output from the BT speedtest @ http://speedtester.bt.com In particular, he'll want to see what the "Profile" setting is for your line. This information should also be displayed in your members area. The "Profile" setting is like a limiter. If it has got stuck at a stupidly low level (for what ever reason), it does not matter how good your line is now, your speeds will be capped to the "profile" limit until such time as it re-sets to match your router sync rate.

If the phone is loosing dial tone you will have to go through BT Retail. There is nothing we can do. Plus is there is a fault the fix cost will be fine which is cheaper than the cost of the new line.

just had a mate of mine who is an engineer test everything internally. It is definately our outside line that is bust. the boxes and everything need checking by a BT engineer. Have updated my ticket. Currently receiving a speed of 75kbs lol.

i have just managed to get an engineer callout ordered for free. looks like my house had a second line installed, the main line goes into a little grey box where 2 lines come out. one of the lines is connected to the master socket and the other just dangles wires exposed. im hoping that when they come and sort that out it might improve my situation :s

lol my telephone wire goes through about 2 sets of trees and into an old box that looks like it has seen better days. i wish my telephone wire went underground. but thats the price you gotta pay when you live out in the country :(

A long shot but at my previous house BT had a pole in a neighbours garden for serving several houses - he revoked the wayleave agreement for it, BT wanted to put a pole in my lane but we got them to run everything underground (under my lane) and remove 2 poles !
Finances may be tighter know tho'.

lol fat chance of that happening. Its hard enough to get the buggers to check the line let alone take it down and run everything underground.
BT is definately the worst company i have ever experianced. To be honest we still shouldnt be living in the age of overhanging copper telephone wires. This is the year 2008! everything should be underground as far as im concerned and fibre optic. No matter where you live!

But BT are far too stingy and lazy. The UK seems to be way behind in regards to high speed internet etc.

i had the engineer out today, he fixed an old splitter box for a second line that was removed ages ago. no fault was found tho. i guess im just stuck on 1mb now :( 6mb was nice for the few years it lasted

lol bunch of cowboys. so instead of admitting that there line is wrong. they just replace a part and dont resolve the problem at all.

awesome

heh i even tried to bribe him into replacing the line all the way back to the mast, about 5 meters from the house lol he wouldnt do it tho and said that bt would not replace the line since theres nothing wrong with it

We never did get to see what your profile actually is. You can see this from the ADSL24 account page, or from the BT speed test. This is important, as this profile will throttle your speed regardless of what your sync is. Unfortunately, what you've produced here doesn't prove or even indicate a line fault at all.

Given that you're connecting fine at 4256 then I'd suspect something else. Does it stay this way in a stable fashion, or do your connection and sync logs jump about all over the place? Seeing them would be quite nice as well.
