Ok so ive been with adsl24 since about may, and my speed has always been under 1mb :( which is crap, but i should be getting around 4mb acording to this graph?
http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/9278/adslattvsspeedchartbs0.jpg
downstream attentuation is 57db
noise margin 7db
my connection speed is apparently 928kbps
So today i decided to take the faceplate off my bt socket, and to my suprise, no wires were connected to the faceplate?!
I see 4 loose wires 2 green/white, and 2 orange/white, and two which appear to be blue and white, but i dont know where these go. I have no extensions or other sockets in the house.
I also attached an i-plate today, and that did nothing!
whats up with my connection?!

Don't forget that graph is "An Ideal World"
LOADS of things can change it, distance to exchange, quality of wiring, TIME OF DAY, server issues etc etc, the list goes on and on.
Just for starters, how far are you from the exchange
put your postcode in here

and let us know the details

ERMMMM
In that case mate, if you have a stable 1mb connection your in good fortune. I don't think you will hit 4mb, sorry

But my mate who lives further away has atleast a 2mb connection,
This is what was behind my faceplate

No cables on the faceplate itself
quoted from my account page "As of 18/04/2008 14:33, your current IP profile is 750 Kbps"
not even 1mb

I used to work as an IT manager at a place about 3 miles from the exchange, they had an unstable 1mb connection, so much so they had to switch to satellite.
Your friend is on the same exchange I presume, different ISP, better quality wiring possibly, and different route for his line, 2.9 miles as the crow flies, but probably a hell of a lot further when it comes to line length

If he is on virgin internet..is he on cable?
as said, can you reduce that image size, just so the convo fits in one full screen, i have a widescreen monitor and it don't fit on that lol

done. I dunno, but this is stupid :( there must be a way of getting over a mb surely?!

If he is on cable, then no way will you match his speed, the fact that he is further away means nothing.
As for "MUST", not really I think mate, short of checking connection direct to the faceplate, making sure the wiring is 100%, but even then, you simply won't hit 4mb I don't think, only way your gonna do that is by moving.
It's sad, but when I moved here 4 years ago, I made sure I knew the location of the exchange, so I could get a decent connection, and that was a factor in buying a house.
that doesnt seem too bad. i have a 1mb connection and im only 800meters from the exchange. 1.4km of actual line away from it.

Line length is the biggest killer for speed in copper wires. If your distance from your exchange is that far, then thats a lot of wires, remember thats an "as the crow flies" reading, the actual line could twist and turn 2x as far.
Your friend maybe on virgins cable services, which doesnt decrease in quality over long distances like copper wires do.
I'm in the middle of Norwich city and im 1.3Km away from my exchange and only get a sync of about 5.5mbit tops, sometimes peak to 6mbit, and it drops off quite quickly, so I'd say that your sync speed is about right.
You can improve line quality a little if your house is badly wired, if you keep the faceplate off and plug the filter into the socket behind the faceplate this effectively removes the other sockets in the house off the circuit and cleans things up a little, give that a shot.
This is why we need fibre rolled out where possible, copper just cannot cope past about a mile.
