View Full Version : Slow Speeds
Interleaving was turned off one week ago. Average speeds were consistently better and were between 4000kbps and 5500kbps.
IP profile was either 6000 or 6500kbps
This morning it all went splat. (Technical term)
Speed dropped to 48kbps and then recovered to 1150 kbps.
BT test produced this at 15.00 hrs
IP profile for your line is - 1500 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 7520 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 1194 kbps
What is going on please?
Your BT profile has dropped to 1500. This is usualy the case if your modem/router drops connection and sync's at around 2000 kbps. This will simply sort itself back out without any further changes. I'm afraid its just how the BT profile system works. We or any ISP have no control over it.
Personally, it's a big waste.

How long does it usually take for the line to sort itself out?
Is the the 10 day period as with a new line?
I think the problem has been I have been trying to get a speedtouch router to work correctly and have been switching between my BT and speedtouch router.
I am now using the BT router, which is what I used when I first started on ADSL Max.
but the IP profile is remaining at 1500.
You need to maintain the higher synch for approx. 3 days before your profile will come up to reflect it.
Ircsum.
This morning my IP profile has gone up to 3500 from 1500 with a corresponding increase in download speed.
As I said previously, up until Sunday the IP Profile was either 6000 or 6500.
One thing I have noticed is that for the last three days (Sun. Mon. Tues.) the router Line Up Time has been regularly resetting. I assume this is because the router was losing connectivity with the exchange.
I was also getting regular messages saying Firefox was closing down because of a problem.
This morning it has stayed connected for 5hours+ and counting.
Is it possible that there was a line problem that has now been sorted?

I've had that, Firefox says it's closing down because of a problem but this has only happened with the latest version of Firefox. I then click on the icon and it says do you want to return to the previous session or start a new session.
And Firefox often uses a lot of CPU when you check task manager.
Update. IP profile now back to 6500
IP profile for your line is - 6500 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 7488 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 3611 kbps
Would the disconnects happen when the IP Profile was changed down and then back up?
Disconnections do not occure when an IP profile is changed. The disconnects are just a part of the 10 day stabalisation period :)
I have just read about disconnects on another thread. How many disconnects need to occur and over what sort of period before the BT system decides to reduce the IP profile?
From what I have read, in order to maintain the IP profile, it appears that the router needs to be powered up 24/7. and not switched on only when the PC is switched on.
Correct, the router should be left on 24/7 regardless of the PC(s).
The profile increases after 3 days of not syncing at a lower speed. However, the profile reduces almost instantly if the router loses sync and resync's 512k lower than the previous sync. Sometimes you can get away with it, but if it happens twice in a row the BT system will take action.

I've found Off-Peak speeds are pretty low. Come 10pm, bam speeds go down. Probably, partly contention on my exchange and everyone's scheduled downloads start. Personally, I would like to see Peak times extended to 11 or 12 pm as I tend to use the Internet most at around 10 to 11. It's the opposite of BT, at 10 to 11pm it would increase in speed.
Might also be as everyone schedules downloads bang on 10pm as that's off-peak. Maybe everyone should schedule it a little later!
