Issue i had was my DNS settings in the router are different to the ones we use and had to set them in network properties. Thats big stuff to me:o :D

Now it is running my downstream on DMT tool is higher than with the netgear do these figures look ok as you know I am over 3km from exchange

SpeedTouch 5x6/585/780WL - MTU change
Aim of this article:
This article describes the method used to alter the default MTU values found in the SpeedTouch range of routers.
Configuration:
MTU cannot be altered via the SpeedTouch's Web interface and must be done via the Command Line Interface.
You will first need to open a terminal or command prompt window.

Mac OS X:
From Go choose Utilities and Terminal.

Windows 2k/XP:
From the Start Menu choose Run, type cmd and click OK.
At the prompt type

telnet 192.168.1.254

By default the username to access the SpeedTouch router is Administrator and the password is blank, ie. nothing. If you have changed these details at some point use your own username and password.

Enter Administrator as the username and press Return/Enter.

You will now see the following prompt:
{Administrator}=>:
Type the following lines of code after the prompt, pressing return/enter after each line.
The mtu value used below is 1458, but you may use any value as you see appropriate up to 1500.
ip ifconfig intf=LocalNetwork mtu=1458
saveall

You may now close this window and the changes should take place immediately

I am also trying to use my old netgear wireless usb dongle in ,y boys computer upstairs but i cannot seem to find the dongle as it has no driver now I have taken the netgear one off the comp.

is there a generic driver that somebody knows of to load onto my netgear dongle or do you think it will only work with a netgear.

Do you think i could load a driver from speedtouch onto it???

Hope this makes sense

I dont know how you can see if its worked as on the web interface of the 585 no MTU settings page. I got the info from someone off dsl zone as i asked the same question as you regarding MTU size on 585.

Was also advised that if you power down or reboot the router it loses the setting and has to be entered again.

Once you've finished tweaking run the command "saveall" without the "" and that should then keep your settings across reboots
