I have just bought 585v6 installed and working fine BUT i cannot get the wireless part working.
I have a netgear usb dongle in my machine up stairs in the wireless connection wizard it can see my router but cannot connect i turned off WPA and firwall to try that but no joy.
my old netgear router and usb had very good signal so i do not think it is that
I have run the search for other devices on the router but it did not find anything
Please has anybody got any ideas

If it can see the wireless but not connect then it is an encryption issue.
Turn of all encryption on your router and make the SSID different to your exisiting wireless connection. On your machine upstairs rescan for wireless networks and try to connect to the new one. If that works add layers of security until you're using WPA with blocked SSID and MAC filters if you feel them necessary.

finally got it connected but the connection is so weak that it drops out.
Is there anything i can use to boost signal ??
I think i am going to hard wire it but that will have to wait
Are 585 routers renound for bad signals as the netgear worked great:mad:

Uhhhhhhhh. Make sure the aerials screwed in the back ;). Is it sited in the same place as your previous router? Have you moved the other computer? Have you covered the dongle with anything?

sited same place
no have not moved other comp
no have not covered
I have tried different areas to see but still poor signal it is directly above me through wood floor very annoying.
Wondered if it was firewalled so even tried that but no joy

Firewalls have no effect on signal strength. Generally the Speedtouch routers have a good signal strength so i can only presume the problems are environmental.
One thought - Did you get it from DSLDepot?

LOL yes do you think that may be why it is recon
Try changing your wireless router's channel through your router's configuration page to see if your signal strength improves.
You don't need to change your computer's configuration, because it'll automatically detect the new channel
If you have cordless phones or other wireless electronics in your home, your computer might not be able to "hear" your router over the noise from the other wireless devices.

would my cordless mouse and keyboard cause issue?
I have tried moving adaptor nearer, sometimes i can connect with good signal then it just goes
Regarding signal strength on 585v6...
I also have a Netgear DG834Gv3 and i get a better signal from the speedtouch .

weird that I have 834gt and it was lot better than speedtouch but i did get this as a recon so that may be an issue
M8 has a linksys access point booster or something like that do we think that might help??
I've seen reports that the 585's wireless can be troublesome and I've personally had problems when using netgear wireless cards to connect to it - have to get Windows to repair the connection every time. That's with DHCP; with a fixed IP on the remote machines it connects fine....but is unusable.
It may be worth trying the Windows zero configuration utility rather than the Netgear software for the connection.

I used the wireless wizard if that is what you mean only used the netgear for the driver part

Very weird got the linkysunit connected and it had ful signal for 1second then disapeared and i could not find any networks again.
Could the firewall in my router cause issue?
It must be about 2/3 feet from my router upstairs but willnot connect anybody got any other ideas to try please???
try using the linksys one initially with no encryption enabled and see if that works - if it does then its an issue with the encryption level you might have set and the level the laptop / desktop is trying to use.
Try changing the channel that the wireless router uses as someone else might have a stronger signal. Try channels 7, 6, 4 or possibly 11 they seem to be quite good but the distance will vary dependent on your own surroundings and the surrounding wireless networks and objects.

I see a lot of posts regarding the wireless channels you can try so I'm going to try and set the record straight. The ONLY channels you should use are 1, 6 or 11. All the others are too close to these and you get bleed over. By all means try a different channel as it is a good suggestion but please stick to one of the three you should use
Paul yes you're right that they overlap but in the UK I thought channels 1 - 13 are available and in the US and some other countries are channels 1-11.
Personally from experience I have found that 1, 6,7,11 to be quite good and also 4.
If you only stick to just 1, 6 or 11 thats ok but it all depends on what signals you have around you e.g. if you have people already using 1,6,7,11 then you might find 4 to be reliable as 1,6, 7 or 11 will probably work but you might not get the distance that you want.

They're all available but you shouldn't use them. The only 3 you should use are 1,6, and 11.
If you're using channel 1 and a neighbour is using channel 3 then you will both have problems with interference. The 3 channels are far enough apart to prevent interference yet the range of wireless is small enough to prevent the space becoming overcrowded.
NetStumbler will tell you if you have any wireless networks in your vicinity and you can choose your channel accordingly

Finally done it chose channel 6 and i now have excellent signal thanks very much for everybody's help, might get some piece from my sons now:D
i find wireless unreliable, use a cat5 cable, will never let you down
