View Full Version : Vista to xp network???
Hi i have set a ms network up with my laptop(vista) and my pc (xp pro). I can share my internet connection and they can see each other when looking at my network. But i can not access any shared xp folders from my laptop. But i can share folders from my laptop through my pc. This is getting so annoying i have been searching the net for 3 days now and have tryed different things that other people have tryed but nothing. My shared files are set for full control with everyone to share. But i keep getting this same message from my laptop that i do not have permission and to contact the adminastrator blah blah. Pleae help as this is driving me nuts
I know how you feel it’s very frustrating.
First thing to check is make sure they are both using the same network
WINDOWS xp is normally MSHOME and vista depending with version you are using is on WORKGROUP, change one so they both use the same.
Also the only way I was able to network them both was to set up a password on the xp machine
thanks for reply i have my workgroups set as the same (home) and permission on xp shared folder is set to everyone with full access i only have windows firewall on both systems which have both exceptions ticked for file sharing. i have only avg free installed as virus protection. Its strange how i can access the laptop folders with xp pro but not using the laptop to access the xp files:confused:. And both systems have a user with password . My mate whos a IT support worker for nhs this one has baffled him. He had a look on both systems and says it should work:rolleyes:

do you login user and pass set on the systems ?
i had a the same problem on my desktop sys i had to login but lappy just booted to windows was not till i set a login on the lappy that i could access files
if you cann't be bothered with login you can install tweakui to do so automatically
Try turning off UAC.. its a waste of space well i think so....;)
Open Control Panel.
Under User Account and Family settings click on the "Add or remove user account".
Click on one of the user accounts "Administrator"
Under the user account click on the "Go to the main User Account page"
Under "Make changes to your user account" click on the "Change security settings"
In the "Turn on User Account Control (UAC) to make your computer more secure" click to unselect the "Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer". Click on the Ok button.
You will be prompted to reboot your computer. Do so when ready
if it dont work....
re-enable UAC just select the checkbox again and reboot.
thanks for your help but still no different:( If it works one way why not the other. Maybe i would be better off installing xp pro instead of vista which was pre installed on my laptop;) At the moment i am doing a vista reinstall with the recovery disk to make sure that i have not changed a setting ect after all i have been messing with the setting for 3 days now;)

I don't know what you've already tried and I haven't used Vista but I find the biggest problem with sharing folders in XP is "Simple File Sharing". I always turn this off via Tools | Folder Options | View. Scroll to the bottom of the list.
If the account you're using in Vista doesn't exist on your XP machine then it should ask you to enter valid account details. If the account on Vista is the same as the account on XP but with a different password then you may get the problems you describe.
Also how are you trying to access the share? \\Computername or \\IPAddress?
hi i have turned both off in xp pro and vista maybe this is a bug in vista it just seem strange that i can view shared vista folders from xp pro but not xp pro folders from vista. I can see the folders but when i try to access them it hangs for a while then tells me i do not have permission and to contact administrator even though permissions is set to everyone with full control in my shared folders:confused:

It would be one heck of an own goal for MS to release Vista incapable of accessing shares on XP.
Double check all your accounts and passwords and specifically allow the users rather than "Everyone"
should i be able to see my vista user profile from the xp pro shared folder permissions as i can only access my pc user names not the laptop(vista) ones as it only lets me choose the location of my pc (xp pro) not my laptop:confused:

No. You can only set share permissions on the local machine.
Make sure that whatever account you use on XP exists on Vista and that they have the same password
Just out of interest - which version of vista are you running?
should i be able to see my vista user profile from the xp pro shared folder permissions as i can only access my pc user names not the laptop(vista) ones as it only lets me choose the location of my pc (xp pro) not my laptop:confused:

I'm not 100% certain what you have tried or not. You should be able to access xp from vista.
try the following and see what happens:-
on both machines click start, then run and type cmd
at the command prompt type ipconfig. (specifically note the ip address part of the xp machine).
from the vista machine at the command line type ping and then the ip address of the xp machine.
e.g. if the xp machine was 192.168.1.14 you would type:-
ping 192.168.1.14
does that work? if not then your xp machine most likely has a firewall on it which is blocking the vista machine allowing it to connect.
Assuming the ping to the xpmachine works and you get replies back. Then try the following:-
start, run, and enter:-
\\192.168.1.14\c$ where the ip address is the ip of your xpmachine
This should try to connect to the default admin share of the c drive on the xp machine.
Assuming simple file sharing has been switched off on the xp machine you should then be prompted for a username and pwd - here enter a user who has access to the xp machine and the associated pwd.
Does that work for you? if not what error or screen do you get?
regards
Cecil.
thanks for that cecil i will try that when i get home:D
i forget to say i am running vista home Premium if that helps
I may or may not be wrong but when im dealing with windows based workgroups/networks the one thing which always causes me issues is NetBios. This needs to be turned on. To do so in XP you go on the TCP/IP settings for the network adaptor your using, click advanced (which is below the bit u assign a static ip) and then on the new window click on WINS at the top and Enable NetBios at the bottom. This needs to be done on all machines but for the vista one you will need to google for the method if it is not done by deafault.
I had a few issues with networking between windows XP and Vista. The main issue was that it was taking a long time to transfer files. After a lot of reading I discovered it was a type of network compression that vista was using. Remote Differential Compression you can turn it off in control panel under programs (link on the left hand side to turn on / off windows features. That sorted the speed issues out.
If you are having problems accessing the vista shares they work slightly differently but if you want to make it easier for yourself its probably easier if you turn off password protection off for shared folders. This is done in networking centre (or whatever they are calling it) You will see your network on the right hand side with the list of things that are enabled on it underneath it. If you see anything with the word password in it turn it off.
I might be slightly off with some of the names of vistas areas my vista machine isnt on at present so im working from memory ;)
