All today Ive been having problems with speed
I'm at a snails space
the guy from entanet OLIVER ...says
BT have reset your line to 135 profile or something
i ask why ...
He says because of frequent disconnections
i say .I'm always disconnecting
to do Microsoft updates ........on other computers etc.
He says you should not do this ...and the line will be reset by BT if you do .and you will loose your profile
i say, i cant believe that .I've being doing this since i first had a computer .this cant be so.
He says .............your supposed to leave it switched on 24/7
and if you don't leave it switched on ...........you will loose
i say people cant do that ..........this is c*ap
i have a usb powered modem ........when the computers off its off ........
and in these energy saving times .........its stupid to expect people to go to bed at night and leave the comp on .not doing anything.
he says get a router ...........
i say ...........my usb modem is working fine, why should I ..........
This is the first time ever I've been told this ....................my bandwidth has always been good .with adsl24........and Ive not changed my behavior ..on my computer at all ...
sometimes its left running through the night ......sometimes not ............i suspect this is average user behavior ...
so what's the guy on about ..

This problem with the BT Profile would apply on an "Up to 8Meg" connection.
Disconnecting at the end of each day and leaving it off overnight should be ok - but multiple disconnects within a short period (say a few hours) will cause the BT system to downgrade your profile. They see this as you having a problem staying connected.
The only way to avoid this would be to use a fixed speed connection (eg 2Meg) - where the profile system is not used.

Obviously it's not working fine, or you wouldn't have speed issues... :)
Have you got a powered USB hub that you can plug the adsl modem in to? That way, the USB modem stays powered on while you reboot your PC during the day. Not sure if this will be sufficient to maintain the connection, though. Maybe a cheap router is the way to go...

I used to have a usb modem and it the pc of course used to be switched off and then switched on again and my speed used to differ quite a lot. It was recommended that I got a router.
And hey yea my ip hasnt changed now for about 9 months and my speed is a constant 6.2mb. Switch your pc off but leave your router on of course.

OK, thanks guys .
It was sorted the next day ..
Despite being told to leave it connected for up to three days ...I turned it off .when I connected in the morning it was right up to speed again ..
Shows in the reports that the profile was altered during the night .when it was off !!!
I'm buying a router ..........buying one for brother too.
Just emailed a guy on ebay that sells brand new NETGEAR DG834G on make offer basis............see if i can get two out of him for less than £45 inc postage.
I did some research and the one above seems to be the best value for money one ..that had the best reviews everywhere....for what it is.
So now Ive got to find something that plugs into the back of the computer .or is it a card that receives the signal from this thing that you plug in internally ?......
Can anyone tell what i need ..what's best ..
Which way to go .
How do i tell if my brothers new computer has a wireless router capabilty already..
I see my local exchange isn't being upgraded to 24 shortly ...earliest Oct 2009 now ......moved from Jan.........
Why is changeover time being moved on for everyone .

If your PC does not have an Ethernet port, you would need to install a network card. What make and model of PC do you have?

There is no Ethernet port ....well i don't know, there is a big square plug hole next to two double usbs
the computer has asus A7N8X mother board with AMD 3000+ xp processor
1000 gigs of hard drive
have look here and tell me if the ports next to the usbs at each end is Ethernet .

a usb dongle or like doorman says get a pci card, but this option means you have to fiddle with the inside,so if you are a bit worried about that ... get a usb wireless dongle ... but you can't put anything else in that ethernet port part from a ethernet cable.

I have no problems fiddling with the inside
I would like to know, the advantages/ disadvantages of usb dongle verses pci card ..
For instance ...............if one day i wanted wireless ...the next day Ethernet cable ........how difficult to swap back from one to other ..
Wireless would be good to try out as a gimmick .............but not long term ....as Ive heard that they put out more radiation than you could get standing under a mobile phone mast.
I also own other computers .................for me to have two comps coupled to this system ...what's involved .
Sorry for all the silly questions ................but i don't know anyone that i could ask ...........im flying blind.
